Holiday abroad - advice needed

I’m off to Tenerife in a couple of weeks with my 3 kids 13, 10 and 8 months.

This is my first holiday as a single parent and I’m a bit anxious so trying to be prepared as possible. I’ve got some questions I’m hoping you can help me with:

  1. Airport security. How easy or difficult is this going to be with a baby on my own?
  2. My baby drinks aptamil and is on solids too. Can you buy aptamil in Tenerife or am I best taking a supply with me for the whole holiday? What about baby food too? I mostly make my own but understand that’s not possible.
  3. Drinking water. Is it okay to boil and cool tap water? We’ll obviously buy bottled water but I’ve heard that’s not great for babies.

Any advice greatly appreciated, along with any other tips as there should probably some stuff I’ve not considered.

Thanks

  1. Not sure
  2. Maybe phone aptamil helpline
  3. Use bottled water with lowest sodium content you can find

Gatwick airport has a special security line for families. Heathrow also pretty straightforward. You can’t use the electronic passport gates with a child so you have to line up to speak to the border agents in person.

If you have a different name then your children it is worth bringing proof you are their parent and if someone else also has parental rights then a letter from them giving permission for you to travel can be useful, you can find examples online (Air Canada has one)

  1. Absolutely fine, your children will have to walk through the scanner first and then you go through carrying the baby.
  2. Take your own milk, you can pre order from the airport boots/Superdrug if you don't want to take up luggage space with a box of milk.
  3. Some bottled water is fine for babies, it will usually have a picture of a baby on the back

If you inform the airline in advance you're travelling alone with children they often arrange priority boarding for you and will give you a hand if you need it on the plane. Have a brilliant time!
