Formula stress

My ds is 7 months and a small baby he's 15.6lbs and in some 3-6 month clothes that I've slightly shrunk.

He's loved his milk since he started on just formula at 4 weeks and has never been an issue.

We started weaning at 5 months please no judgment this was advised due to his size. So he's been eating for 2 months and LOVES his food. The last two weeks he's been increasingly difficult when having his bottles and has been dropping one so down to 3 7oz a day and a couple of ounces. I've started giving him lunch and made some meals with formula in risotto and rice puddings which have 4oz a portion which is great and also stated using ready brek porridge with 2oz in the morning.

The last couple of days though he's been refusing almost all his milk today he's also been waking during the night whereas he unusually sleeps through for 11 hours. Today he's had
4.30- 5oz
07.30-completely refused
11.30- 2 oz
15.30- refused
I've managed to get him to have 2oz before his tea and going to just give him formula filled foods.

Not sure what to do?

My DD is 9 months and weighs 16lb 14oz's and still in 3-6 months, she's just petite. She has recently started to reduce her milk intake as she's eating more. So if your DS is eating well but refusing his milk, he may not be hungry.

But if you're worried, I'd speak to your HV.

Is he also following his percentile?

We have had this a few times during our 9 month old's life especially around new teeth cutting! Offering milky foods like you are doing is exactly what I would have done. As long as he's eating well, behaving normally and still giving you his normal wet/dirty nappies then it's probably nothing to worry about but of course if you do have any concerns about anything then your GP, HV, a pharmacist or 111 can help!

DS is 6 months and I've had to give him more food because he is refusing bottles too. I mix formula in everything I can and usually he can have 10-15oz a day this way.

He is following his centile I'm not concerned about that, nor am I concerned about his size was just explaining that as I guess it's a reason why I'm so worried he's refusing his milk as he can't afford to lose weight.

I'm wondering if he's off his milk because he's teething, but he did happily eat all his breakfast and lunch today and has eaten a portion of rice pudding with extra formula for tea. I have deliberately not given him much for tea today in hope he'll have a full 7oz bottle before bed.

My first thought was teething, I think the sucking on a bottle feels uncomfortable for them. Could you try milk in a cup?

gilmoregal · 22/09/2018 18:56

Thanks Grouchy, good to know others have had the same and had the same ideas to get milk into them. He's having wet and dirty nappies and is currently laughing his head off and is absolutely himself apart from bursts of upset from teething.

Think I'm over worrying as he's always had his milk so well.

These I have tried it in a cup but he wouldn't have it, he's not interested in a cup yet though as he refuses water.
