Had enough of being cold on touch lines and would appreciate any advice before weather gets worse on a practical warm coat. I have a totally open mind but would like a hood. Any suggestions or recommendation would be most appreciated - prefer to avoid anything / brands with real fur thank x

i have one from joules like this one: www.joules.com/Women/Jackets-Coats/Snowbury/Padded-Coat/Marine-Navy?id=Z_SNOWBURY|MARNAVY and it is so warm and cosy. totally agree about the fur thing, this one is faux fur so its not a worry. all the best x

Not sure about coats but I got dh a pair of padded trousers from Go Outdoors (just the ones that they had on offer at the time for about £15) that are also windproof. They have mens and ladies versions.

They make a real difference to him - to the point that he's been and bought some more that are even warmer.

They are not pretty (well, the ladies version) but they are worth their weight in gold. One of his pairs is to wear as a pair of trousers, the other is a pair of over trousers that you can either wear over the other pair or thermal leggings or jeans, depending on what else you are wearing and doing.

He also has found that having a thing thermal top (he has a merino one from costco that didn't cost much, or m&s do their thermal range of tshirts that look like ordinary tshirts that you can layer up, rather than looking like old fashioned thermals) that's a warm layer right next to the skin is important. And he has some thermal socks - a thin pair for next to the skin and a thick pair for over the top - both thermal. Keeps him really warms - he has converted quite a few other parents to the padded trousers and those without definitely shiver and are much colder/complain more about the cold when it's really cold whereas they're all pretty similar at the moment when it's not too cold.

Thank you - think padded definitely way to go - I have base layers from skiiing that I will dig out and will pad my self out - will never understand why they don’t play over the summer months x

Agree - it is mainly about the layers, but also about not getting cold from the ground up. Make sure you have a decent pair of boots or walking shoes (a bit bigger than your normal size) and wear walking / ski socks in them. If they have a thick base, that will insulate you from the cold.
Wear a scarf or buff around your neck as that keeps your pulse points warm. Do not wear jeans (they hold the water once wet).

I've bought hams warmer thingys for this season.

It starts with normal socks, on top of those go the 2.3 tog socks. Then it's thermal leggings, leggings, a long sleeved thermal top, another top and a jumper. Scarf, hat and the thickest gloves I can find.
Sometimes I get the blanket outnumber of the car, but this year I'm taking a hot water bottle or two too!

Terrible typing. Hand warmer things and the blanket out of the car!

You want neoprene lines boots too, so you can still feel your toes by the end.

I have a gorgeous coat by Tog24, it’s like wearing a duvet but it’s so soft and light and has got the softest fleece lining, especially in the pockets, it’s lovely on the hands. Really warm and cosy.

They need soft ground to keep injuries down.

Think the jeans have been my biggest problem! Ski sock ready for next weekend - definitely going for long length dark coloured coat. I need to find last years hand warmers and boil them to reset them. I am a summer person !
