How old did you keep your child in your room after birth?

Just wondering.

I am a mum to be. Baby is due in Feb and we are currently in a 2 bedroom house. Second bedroom is used as a spare room and my husband son sleeps there when he comes over EOW.

We are looking at moving and have found a 3 bed we like (we want three or four bedrooms) but our house is not sold yet so realistically we will probably still be in this house when baby is born.

How long is “normal” to keep baby with you as parent?

It’s not a big problem as it’s a big enough room that could have a bed and cot in it if needed although obviously not ideal../

TIA

4 months. We didn't have a big enough bedroom to fit a cot in our room. He was too big for the Moses basket. The house was so tiny his cot in the nursery was still really close to us and we didn't shut doors. And we used a baby monitor. Grin

5.5 months for my DD. She was in a snuzpod next to my side of the bed so I could breastfeed easily during the night, and once she had dropped a lot of the night feeds we moved her into her own room and big cot as she was getting a bit big for the Snuzpod and starting to wriggle a lot. She moved really easily, and loved the extra space even tho she seemed so teeny tiny at first! Can recommend doing some daytime naps in there first, it seemed to help us. Biggest pro was establishing the bedtime routine, she's a great sleeper and goes to bed well which works for us.

6 months with DD1 but like others, she keeps returning....
DD2 is still in with us at 7 months. She still wakes several times a night and hates the cot.

8 months, when he was mobile enough for it to be dangerous to be left in the sidecar cot. I went into the kids room with him, the draw of the marital bed is not strong.

Eldest - 2 weeks. Outgrew the Moses basket and there was no space in our room at the time for the cot bed. No problems or anything.
Youngest - 7 months. Much smaller baby, new house with bigger master bedroom and an undecorated box room. Again, not a problem.

DC1 about 6 months
DC 2 about 9 months
DC3 is 4 and a half and is still in with us most of the night Grin

At the moment I can see myself wanting baby with me as long as possible.

But I do like the idea of getting him or her into a good sleep routine. I was quite good at sleeping in my own room from a young age but my brother was in with my Mum and Dad for a lot longer.

I’m thinking of getting a snuzpod for in our room

If you want the option of keeping the baby in with you for longer consider the size of the crib you use. My baby has just grown out of his Moses basket age 3 months. Fortunately we only used it for day time naps and have a next to me which will last him a bit longer. Some of the bed side cribs are bigger than others.

Mwnci123 · 21/09/2018 22:29

My two year old still doesn't sleep alone. I feel ok about the idea of her sleeping alone now, having felt uneasy about it until fairly recently, but no great urge to make the change either. I'm

Mwnci123 · 21/09/2018 22:31

Also, re sleep routine- sharing a room didn't stop us sleep training before I went back to work. Nights were pretty hard before that though.

Lazypuppy · 21/09/2018 22:41

Baby (8 months) went into her room at 8 weeks. Before that we put her to bed upstairs without us anyway

Stripybeachbag · 21/09/2018 22:45

At about 6 months she was in her own cot in her own room. Between then and a year ago we played musical beds nearly every night. At 6, she now shares a room with us!

OlderThanAverageforMN · 21/09/2018 22:46

About 2weeks. We all sleep better apart. Never had a child in bed with me all night. If they woke, quick cuddle then back to bed.

60sname · 21/09/2018 22:46

I think we lasted 5 and a half months last time. Will probably be similar this time. Small children are so all-consuming, I can't be in a room with them 24 hours a day.

hungryhippie · 21/09/2018 22:48

7 years old and im still sleeping with a 4 and 2 year old.

DS1 moved out at 2 and 3 months because DS2 was due and we didn’t want him being woken by the baby. DS2 is only 3 months but I would want to keep him in with us for as long as possible.

ohdeardeardear · 21/09/2018 22:57

It is only the western world who get so hung up on sleep with babies. My son was 16 months but he still ends up in with us a few nights a week. I love it.

YouBetterWORK · 21/09/2018 23:26

6 and a half months, I would have wanted a bit longer but then the day came when she pulled herself to standing in the next2me - it was time for the cot, which doesn't fit in our room. I used to go up with her and stay up, now evening telly in the front room is a thing again! I would say we slept better too, I'd wake at any toss and turning in the crib.

lexi727 · 21/09/2018 23:31

7 months but he occasionally comes and sleeps with us now he's 2! When my DH is away I always have him in bed with me.

orangeicecream · 21/09/2018 23:44

About 15 minutes.... Couldn't handle the snuffling. Slept better apart.

Kintan · 21/09/2018 23:47

We’re all still in same bed at 20
months.

TheSheepofWallSt · 21/09/2018 23:49

He’ll have been in my bed for 2 years on Sunday ...

No plans to move him out anytime soon

happymummy12345 · 21/09/2018 23:57

Until he was 16 months. Only moved him then because we wanted to put him in a proper toddler bed and needed him to get used to his own room first
I hated it though
