Considering giving 8 month old low dose of antihistamine

DS is 8 months and has had an absolutely rotten cold for over a week now, somehow seems worse than any cold he's had before (altho only had 2 previously) he's bunged up (but not snotty) and he has an awful cough thats keeping him awake alllll night. I got about 3 hours sleep last night and I don't imagine he got much more.

Usually he's such a happy baby, full of joy - and a pretty good sleeper. But he seems so miserable at the moment, overtired and grizzly.

We've tried all the usual - calpol, nurofen, calpol plug in, snuffle babe, humidifier, olbas oil baby, titling his cot, the snot sucker... (oh the horror) and nothing seems to be touching this cold. He's so sleep deprived I feel awful for him.

I've read about people giving antihistamine to dry up snot / open airways and allow for more sleep and I'm considering trying a low dose.

Does anyone have any experience?

Antihistamines aren't sold for children under the age of 1 so I wouldn't give them to an 8 month old. Have you tried saline nasal spray?

No not unless I had been advised by a medical professional. Honestly colds are shit and horrible for little ones and it sucks having broken sleep but it will pass within a few days.

Nope! The kids one we have is only from a year old. All it would do is stop him being sneezy or sniveling.

My ds had a terrible skin reaction to a cream I used on him when he was 7 months old. The out of hours gp prescribed piriton but the pharmacist said do not use it unless he desperately needs it. I don't think it will dry up snot anyway. Unless it's not a cold and is an allergy.

My DD is dangerously allergic to certain foods. At 6 months old the dr have us baby piriton. It's for older babies, but she said 2.5ml is fine. I don't see how it would work on a cold though?? A virus rather than an allergy? Give your GP a call
