Just this , he is very distressed lots of leg kicking and pushing but trump's only as a result. He is exclusively breastfed.
I've tried a massage. Tummy time, sitting g him more upright and warm baths.
He appears to have a bit of a cold so maybe it's that?
He's weeing as normal and feeding as normal. No temperature as I've checked.
Is this normal? I'm starting to get a bit worried.

Hi, I'm not sure if this advice has changed since (my 3 are all over 10) but I was told to give them a little bit of boiled and cooled water if they were constipated.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 17/09/2018 11:58

Completely normal. My exclusively breastfed now 18wo started pooing every couple of days at around that age and now only poos around every 4 days (most he has gone is 7 days). I believe up to two weeks is normal. There’s no reason to think it is constipation at this stage - they are just using the breast milk differently and don’t need to poo yet - if when it does come it’s not a normal poo then do seek advice, or if it is approaching 2 weeks of no poo perhaps. And yes, the stinky farts as he approaches his next poo are unbelievable!

Also re the wind, it can be bothersome for them but you are doing the right things. They have immature guts and sometimes it’s not actually painful but they are confused about the sensations and their brains just don’t communicate with their bowels in the way that they will when more mature. They do grow out of it. However, if you’re really concerned that baby is in pain or something is wrong then contact the HV or GP

I'm prob just fussing as first time mom. If he's not gone in next day or so I'll ask HV

Breastfed babies don't poop as much as formula babies. Mine went 11 days without pooping just keep doing what your doing. Also eating some pears or peaches will help when it goes into your milk

Foodylicious · 17/09/2018 12:12

My bf baby was the same.
Read lots of stuff saying they could go up to 7 days...So on day 8 we went to the gp.
Gp said his tummy was soft and fine and we didn't need to do anything.

I had to start antibiotics that day for an infection and I suspect the antibiotics on my milk helped him go.

This was however his pattern for the next 4 months average was about 6-7 days.
Longest was 11 days.

Some of the poosplosions were rather spectacular Shock Grin

BigBlueBubble · 17/09/2018 12:19

Mine changed his habits around that time. Instead of going 3-4 times a day he switched to only going once every 3-4 days. He’s absolutely fine and I have fewer yucky nappies to change!

whirlingandwhirling · 17/09/2018 12:42

Use 2 fingers with some oil on (just vegetable oil is fine). Massage around their belly button in a clock wise direction, with a firm but not hard movement.
Then cycle their legs in a cycling motion. Also bring their knees up to their chin and hold for 10 seconds.
My dd used to suffer from awful constipation at this age and the above tips really helped.
She managed to poo 90% of the time I was doing the above.

FranticallyPeaceful · 17/09/2018 12:51

It’s normal! Breastfed babies absorb more and there isn’t the fake sugar stuff in the milk to stimulate the bowels. It’s perfectly normal for breastfed babies to go days without pooping even if they had previously been going every day.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/09/2018 12:53

Totally normal for exclusively breasted babies to go only once or twice a week. They absorb so much of the nutrients from the bm there is barely any waste.

OoohAyyye · 17/09/2018 12:54

My ebf baby went longer than that without pooing and would then have a poo explosion! This was the norm for quite a while. Totally normal.

Rebecca36 · 17/09/2018 12:57

Quite normal. Plenty of adults don't poo every day, babies are no different. He'll go when he's ready.

Spanglyprincess1 · 17/09/2018 13:03

Thanks everyone...relived it's normal. Will keep an eye on him as he has a cold but glad it seems he's okay.

My DS did this a couple of times. Carry spare clothes when you go out. When DS pooed after 4 or 5 days once, it was SPECTACULAR. We heard it from the next room.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 17/09/2018 18:40

Agree about the explosion (and also potency - it was quite concentrated after all that time!) - I had to clean it out of his armpits the other day

DappledThings · 17/09/2018 19:52

For 2 months at that age mine only pooed once a week. On Wednesday mornings. It was disturbingly regular!

Spanglyprincess1 · 17/09/2018 20:04

He seems much happier but no poo!
He also did the armpit poop once in an over the head onsie...it wasn't good!
I'll remember the lots of clothes changes advice
