Unsupervised Access to Bathroom at Night...

Hi everyone, I'd just like to see what people think here as I feel uneasy about this myself.

Our toddler is toilet trained and we're going to convert his cot bed into his big boy bed...all very exciting for him :D

We have been pondering where to put the baby gate...at his bedroom door (with his potty in the room) or at the top of the stairs (giving free access to bathroom at night).

Now, I want to put it at the stairs and let him use the bathroom on his own (if he needs it) BUT I feel really uneasy because he is able to put the plug in the bath and turn the taps on. Am I being paranoid??

Sure, some kids wouldn't bother with that but like a lot of kids, mine loves the water and will take a bath at ANY opportunity so we're left feeling really freaked out at the prospect of him having the opportunity to do this while nobody is watching.

What do you all think? What did you do?

Thanks :)

I would let him have access to the bathroom. Though my DDs have never thought to fill the bath with water by themselves.

You could take the plug off the chain and hide it at night?

Is the plug attached to the bath? If not, just remove it at night?! Would put your mind at rest.

I can't believe I didn't think of this already... Blush

Thank you!

I just thought, you know, people are going through this all over the world and managing just fine...why am I paranoid??

I would put it at the top of the stairs but then just make sure you get up at night if you hear him wandering about. Mine has been in a bed since 17 months and we took the stair gates away shortly before 2 (as she could go up and down the stairs perfectly fine).

She’s 5 now. She has only recently started to use the toilet at night. If he’s dry at night, then he likely won’t need to use the toilet, but if he isn’t, it will likely be awhile. If you hear him shuffling about, just get up and put him back to bed. It would take a lot for mine to make it to the bathroom before I heard. I know she’s up the second she gets out of bed.
