How do I get DS out of night time nappies??

Sorry if there is a link already on this but just wondered what advice any of you could offer.

Ds is 3.5 years old. He has been potty trained in the day since last October. Was wondering at what stage/age should he be out of nappies at night and any tips on how I can start doing this?

TIA

Hi, I can't help you but have the same problem with my DS, he is 3.10 and has been dry in the day since last summer. I have tried cutting out drinks before bedtime and that hasn't worked, he still has a very full nappy in the morning.

I have been told by several people that it is a hormone in the brain and until it kicks in it won't happen, kind of figure that he will do it when he's ready.

He starts school in September so maybe peer pressure will help him

It's not something you can "train" - it happens when they're ready, and there's nothing you can really do to make it happen.

As rosepetal says, there's a hormone which kicks in to suppress urination overnight, and until that happens they aren't physically able to be dry. They don't start seeing it as a problem until a child is 7.

Dd is 6, out of nappies for over three years during the day, and still not dry at night. It'll come when she's ready.

Hi wigwambam, what nappies do you use? I use pampers size 6 but as my DS is quite big for his age not sure they will last at that long.

Thanks for the advice - various people have said he needs to be out of nappies by the time he is 4, or usually its done around a year after being potty trained in the day.

I'll stop worrying now and let him decide when he's ready.

Thanks all

Tescos size 6 35lb+ are good, dd is very tall for her age too (she's in age 9 clothes) and they still fit.

She prefers Pyjama Pants though, because she feels a bit self-conscious about still having a nappy. They're OK most of the time although we get more leaks than we did with the Tescos. They do two sizes, one age 4 - 7 and one age 7 - 14.

That's still quite young IMHO. I wouldn't stress about it too much. Some 5 yo's I know still wet at night. They are all different.

I'd suggest keeping an eye on things and wait until he has a few dry nappies in the morning. My DS1 told me he didn't want to wear them anymore and that was that at 3. DS2 was completely different and I did A LOT of bedchanging, but I stuck with it and he was out of bed-time nappies by 4. Just don't worry too much about it would be my best advice!

Mine's 5.5 and lovin' those night nappies. My others came out of them sooner and I wondered if that's because they were in washables which must be less comfy.

WigWamBam · 08/06/2007 15:00

Don't listen to anyone who tries to put an age limit on it, Monkey. There's no age limit, and there's no set time after being dry in the day for it to happen.

There was a thread a while back full of people with children over the age of 4 and still not dry - there are loads of us.

rosepetal1 · 08/06/2007 15:02

Thanks that's really helpful will have a look out for them!!

Here is the other thread - you're in good company!

Thanks for that link WigWam - that'll teach me to listen to numpty's

I thought he potty trained late, from what other people have told me, as he was nearer 3 than 2 and like a muppet I tend to listen to every one else. I think I will be guided by my children and not by what someone elses opinion is
