Periods after breastfeeding.

How long did it take for your periods to return after you stopped breastfeeding?

I exclusively breastfed for 6 months, fed twice daily for a month after that but haven't fed for approx 5 weeks now but they've not yet returned.

Mine returned at 8 mo and I'm still bf at 14 mo. Every one is different.

AveABanana · 09/09/2018 20:50

DC1 - periods at 6 months, bf until 9mo.
DC2 - bf until 15 mo, periods at 18 mo.

I've been feeding for 7 months and no sign of a period x

I’m on month ten breastfeeding, still not had a period! I’m absolutely dreading the first one 🙈 Bet it’ll be on my first day back at work lol.

ABitCrapper · 09/09/2018 20:56

DC 1 & 2 - as soon as I'd been back at work for a while, so there was a decent break in feeding. About 14 months.

Dc3 - haven't gone back to work and they returned at 25 months when he stopped night feeding so often.

I've heard it depends more on if you get a break from feeding. Mine have all fed day and night every 2 hours or so regardless of solids so it looks either a return to work, or sleeping through more, for them to return.

ABitCrapper · 09/09/2018 20:59

Sorry missed a vital bit of information! - the return was about 2 months after the break started - so 2 months after starting work, or sleeping more.

I would give it a bit longer OP - you will probably get it back in the next few weeks.

Cupoftchaiagain · 09/09/2018 21:00

15 months first time, 24 months second time! Still breastfeeding when they returned.

bourbonbiccy · 09/09/2018 21:00

13 months in and still no period, stopped feeding 1 month ago. But I hadn't had a period for over 12 months before I was pregnant so I don't think that's of much help. They were looking into why I wasn't having periods when they told me I was 15wks pregnant.

EekThreek · 09/09/2018 21:02

Dc1 came back when she was 1yr and 2 weeks old. At 1yr old I cut down to two feeds a day, 12 hours apart, and always assumed it was that.

Dc2 I stopped feeding at 10mo, my periods returned about 4/5 weeks later.

DC3 I am still feeding at 7mo and no period yet, although I do get that draggy/crampy pre-period feeling every 4 weeks since she was born. Weird.

BF for 8 months. AF returned (with avengance) 3 months later

chloechloe · 09/09/2018 21:18

I BF both for a year and had to stop BFing completely before my periods came back. It probably took around 5-6 weeks from stopping with each. With my second I then bled for around 9 days Angry

Lottt · 09/09/2018 21:38

Thanks, looks like they'll hopefully return in the next few weeks. I want to starting thinking about TTC soon so hope they won't be much longer.

Still breastfeeding but rhey bugger came back after 6 months!

PlinkPlink · 09/09/2018 21:46

I exclusively bf from the get go. At 7 weeks my period returned. I was not fucking happy 😂😂😂 I'd been getting frustrated and wanting to have sex... and was looking forward to the no contraception option... bastard body 😂

I still bf now at 14mo.

musicalmama · 09/09/2018 21:49

Stopped at 7 months. Was down to 2 bf a day at that point and period came about 3 days later!!!

arbrighton · 10/09/2018 12:23

@Plinkplink

Can still get pregnant even when BF and no periods so not sure what you thought was a no contraception option?!?!??

Bluemoon88 · 10/09/2018 12:31

My periods came back at around 10 weeks. EBF to 10.5 months but DS started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks old (I know, very lucky!) so I think that's why they returned so soon.

PlinkPlink · 10/09/2018 12:34

@arbrighton

Link to NHS website. Scroll down to Contraception and Breastfeeding:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/sex-contraception-after-birth/

FYI: No contraception method is 100% proof.

arbrighton · 10/09/2018 16:50

I said you can still. I am fully aware. It was you talking about a no contraception option that I was querying. SOrry, I was unclear.

FranticallyPeaceful · 10/09/2018 17:22

Fully exclusively breastfed all three of mine until they were 2 and 3 (and stil bfing one) and I got mine at three months old every time Angry

You’re all lucky arses.
