Vomiting, lethargic toddler

Hi there

This is a first post and I would be very very grateful if anyone out there recognised the symptoms which have come with our two year old daughter being quite unwell over the past two to three months.

She vomits every few days (with a period about two weeks ago where it was a daily occurrence) and has been lethargic for several months now too. This takes the form of listlessness and placing her head on our laps and shoulders and not wanting to play. Today we are more concerned than before as she asked to go for a nap about an hour and a half after waking up this morning (she slept for 45 minutes), and then asked for her further nap at 11.30 (her usual nap time).

We have been to our GP on three occasions and were referred to our paediatric A&E, where (thankfully) they found nothing acutely wrong after doing blood tests. After this there has been about a week and a half where she has been doing better but last night she vomited again and is listless as mentioned above. A traditional visit to our playground - which she normally laps up - lasted just 10 minutes before she asked to come home.

Through all of this, curiously, her appetite has been good and she asks for food on a fairly regular basis.

We now have an appointment to see a specialist paediatrician at a major city hospital but that appointment is about four weeks away.

In the meantime we are wracking our brains for what the cause of her poorliness might be. A homeopath visited the other day and we are waiting for her conclusions. Also, we are trying our daughter out on a gluten free diet, but the vomiting has continued to occur.

I can't think of any other important details to mention here. People do remake on how particularly pale she is, but that is a feature of both of our families.

Grateful for any thoughts.

You may already do this but do you keep a food diary and a diary of when she's sick to check for any correlation?

AwdBovril · 08/09/2018 16:40

As the gluten free diet hasn't made any difference, I'd be inclined to put her back onto regular bread etc. YY to the food diary, as well. Does she see / stay with anyone else?

Havetothink · 08/09/2018 16:57

Also have they checked to make sure she hasn't eaten something she shouldn't have done that might be stuck somewhere?

No, but that’s an extremely good idea. Will do now. Literally trying anything now

We don’t think she’s eaten anything she should let have. This has been going on for weeks. Plus a&e tests didn’t find anything in bloods. Thanks for the advice re going back on normal bread. May do that too... it tempted to Hobson with gluten free for a bit yet (doc advised it would take time to take affect) Thanks for your advice.. this is quite upsetting. V grateful to hear from anyone else who has similar experiences. She’s been listless all day now. Asks for food (and eats it.. maybe for comfort?!) but just wants to be hugged and carried all the time. Quite different from our normal chirpy cheeky little girl 😔

I’m not a dr or anything approaching one, but have you looked into post-viral fatigue syndrome?

I hope you find an answer soon Flowers

NELondonDad · 09/09/2018 09:33

Thanks again for your advice. Still very very listless again today and wanted to go to bed at 930 - now sleeping. Eating ok but just doesn’t want to walk. Putting head down as lot on lap and closing eyes. Managed to get an appointment to see a paediatrician tomorrow but it feels like an age till then. Anyone else out there with toddlers suffering from recurrent and severe fatigue?

What did they check for in the blood tests?

NELondonDad · 09/09/2018 09:44

Full blood count, urea, creatidin, albumin, much more which I’m not sure make much sense to list here. A full range in other words - all normal

Poor little thing, sounds pretty worrying to me, not at all normal toddler behaviour. Glad you are admitted, much easier to get things done as an inpatient. Stand your ground there until the y put a plan of action in place. Hope you get a diagnosis and she's better very soon x

Havetothink · 10/09/2018 08:43

Hope they figure it out quickly FlowersBear

Glad you are there. Hope she's bouncing around soon.

JLG19 · 10/09/2018 12:30

Sad she's in the right place now. What happened yesterday? Hope they get to the bottom of it soon Flowers

babyxbee · 10/09/2018 12:36

Hope they can get to the bottom of what's going on soon 💕

delilahbucket · 10/09/2018 12:41

This sounds like a food intolerance. I'm surprised no doctor has told you to keep a food diary. I really hope you find out what is wrong soon and she gets better.

Smellybean · 10/09/2018 12:51

Could also be acid reflux. My dd has suffered with this for years with similar symptoms
Hope she’s feeling better soon. Flowers

Hi again everyone. Thought we should update you on this as it is good news of a sort. Our daughter was diagnosed as Coeliac not long before Christmas. She's in the process of making a complete recovery now thanks to being on a gluten free diet. No more vomiting, normal weight gain has resumed and she has colour in her cheeks and is a very spirited, energetic little girl. A life change - for all in our home in some ways - but relief all round. Thanks so much again for your help and kind words.

Poor little pet. Im so happy you’ve got a diagnosis

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 10/01/2019 13:02

A lot to get your head round, but, once there's a diagnosis there's a plan and that's always a good thing.

Hope you get used to the new normal and she keeps well.
