Sterilise or not? 10m old EBF, adding in formula, & fed to sleep currently!!

Hi, my 10m is due to start nursery in 5 weeks. He is weaned but breast fed at breakfast, and before bed. He is breast fed to sleep for mid morning nap, and afternoon nap too. He also wakes 2-3 times at night, and usually gets boob for those too! He's eating three meals a day too.

I've added in a cup of formula before afternoon and bedtime boob. He takes about 75-100mls. I'm hoping to stop boob for afternoon and morning in the next couple of weeks but I'm worried as he feeds to sleep.

In terms of formula, do I need to sterilise bottles to prepare formula in when out? I wasn't going to but my friend said today I should!

If you're storing milk in the fridge, or pre mixing before you go out, it's a good idea to sterilise. If you're making up fresh bottles and using straightaway, then a good wash is fine (dishwasher also OK)

With my 3rd dc, I moved straight to cows milk at 10 months (while still breast feeding too) and didn't sterilise at all. Not sure what current advise it, but this was fine with my now 7 year old.

current advice is cow's milk should not be a main drink before 1

And always to sterilise for formula

The official advice in the U.K. is to sterilise until a year for formula, but really I don't think it's necessary. I'm in Canada and guidance here is only sterilise for the first 6 months. My 11 month old has an occasional bottle of formula and we just put bottles and teats in the dishwasher.

Honestly though, since your baby will be at least 11 months by the start of nursery, you'd be fine to just give a beaker of cow's milk

Nhs advice is formula until 1 if not bf. If you are using formula then you need to sterilise.

BoBro · 08/09/2018 14:46

The advise has always been formula as main drink and sterilising until 1.
But, if you're breastfeeding, I'm sure cows milk as an extra is absolutely fine. This is what we did and had no problems.

I don't sterilose for formula, just make sure i make it with hot enough water. I think i stopped sterilising around 5 months or so

You should always sterilise for formula, even after the age of one. It’s such a good growth medium for bacteria and it’s no hassle to sterilise.

Lazypuppy · 09/09/2018 17:23

How does bacteria form when i was the bottle then make make the formula?

As long as formula is added to hot water, that kills any bugs in the formula. And bottle is washed

NHS does still advise to sterilise for formula at any age but they are generally conservative and do not like deviating from the WHO advice (with covers both developed and developing world).

A lot of other countries (e.g. US, France, etc) have revised their guidelines and believe sterilisation is no longer necessary. I am sure UK/NHS will also get there - it is just a matter of time.

It is absolutely true that formula is not sterile but sterilising bottles does not do anything about it. Any potential bacteria in formula should get killed when milk gets prepared with warm/hot water (over 70C).
