Toilet training straight to the loo (i.e. skipping potties)

I am interested in 'potty' training ds but using the toilet trainer seats rather than potties as I find the latter a bit yucky and don't like the idea of it.

What are the pros and cons of going straight to the loo and has anyone got any tips?

I'm sure this is a well-worn thread topic so apologies

I did this with my ds, (2yrs 4mths) as I had to wait until he settled with the new baby.

He didn't like the potty anyway and wanted to use the big toilet.

Took him 3 days to get the hang of it and he's had very few accidents since. I also think it's not as scary for them if they are at someone else's house or have to go in town and there is no potty!

If you can get them to do this, its great. The only bad thing I can think is if you are out and about and they need the loo, with none about as when they start they can't hold it for long. If they could use the potty as well you could just get some disposable liners.

did this with dd (but she was nearly 3) never bothered with a potty .. worked fine and no cleaning out

Dd4 went straight from nappy to toilet at age 2. No problems at all. She needed help for a while but by the time she was 2.5 she caould get herself on and off the toilet

I only used a potty because we don't have a downstairs toilet and suspected there would be accidents if he had to go upstairs which would then undermine his confidence, not to mention mess up the carpet in our rental!

If we'd had a downstairs loo I would've gone straight to that because dealing with poop makes me wretch. I don't really see a downside. Much easier in some respects as he probably already knows what it's for, ds was quite puzzled by the potty even though we had books about potties!

we never bothered with the potty but that was my kids decision. I had one but they all hated it. It worked fine for us.

We've just done this with DD and also did it with DS. Only trouble is DD isn't tall enough, even with a step, to get onto teh toilet by herself so it means she can't just take herself to the toilet, I always have to go with her.
I would recommend trying to get her used to the potty as well though then yous hould be covered for all eventuallities

Thanks - good advice.

I have noticed since I bought the trainer seat (3 days ago) when I have said ' do you want to go to the toilet' he is dead keen - he loves being 'like daddy' so it really seems to make sense as that will be much more like what we do.

Ds is short (he is 23m) for his age so I guess it will be quite a while before he can reach the loo himself but I don't think it should be a problem as I'd always be going with him anyway.

Any other tips anyone?

our DS did his wees standing up right from the start which saved on accidents when he couldn't push his willy down quick enough. Again it was a 'copying dad' thing and also, as he was Fireman Sam fan, he liked to 'put the fire out with his hose'

I got a really good double step from Mothercare - it has a bottom step that slides out and is wooden and very sturdy (we have the world's tiniest bathroom, so needed something small). I'm just starting this for the umpteenth time with DS (aged 3+) and there is no way he will even look at a potty so it's straight to toilet for him.

Not long after I started training my wee girl (with a potty) I bought a step and toilet seat. As soon as she saw it she forgot about the potty and wanted to be a big girl. Never had any probs
