Hi all!!

I know I can always turn to the wonderful MN when in times of need and desperation.

I am writing an essay on group dynamics for my midwifery BSc, and we have been given a reference for group roles from a book by Gerald Wilson and Michael Hanna called "Groups in Context". However, the uni library do not stock it (bloody rediculous if you ask me, if it is being included in the syllabus )

Anyway, I have searched high and low for it, and I am getting nowhere, and unless I pay something in the region of £40 for it (which on my bursary is impossible!) I'm not going not get it....

And that is where MN comes in.....Does anyone have a copy of this book I can borrow, or buy. I will pay all postage, and will return it as soon as I am finished with it.

I really hope you can help me...c'mon MN I know you can!!

Thank you xxxxxxxxx

Thank you Scorpio, but they are all shipped from the US and not sure they will arrive in time...

...I haven't left my essay til the last minute, you undertand, but the lecturer ho wrote the lecture notes has only just been able to find the reference to this book.....useless!!!

Where are you? If your local college/uni runs a midwivery course you may be able to check their online catalogue. Lots of larger universities have their catalogues avail to the public now. You may not be able to borrow but you could go in and use as reference/photocopy.

The uni library don't stock the book at all and their catalogue also covers another uni it has connections with.

Hi coathanger.

I often have to source rare books for my job, so I thought I'd have a look for you. I think you're right, you're not going to be able to get it in time.

There are a couple of sellers on amazon that have it in the UK but as you say it's horrendously expensive, however if you can lay out the cash you will be able to re-sell afterwards and get most of it back.

If you do this I can highly recommend aphrohead book who are one of the sellers in the UK. I've used them a few times in the past and they always send your books quickly and in good condition.

Thank you Anorak. I think I will give it until Sunday, and if nobody has a copy, and if I can't find a cheaper copy one way or another, I will take your advice.

And thank you, Niceglasses. Sorry, my reply to you sounded a bit sharp...it wasn't meant to be and I relly appreciate your advice

I seem to have had a bit of a result.....no, I haven't got my hands on the book..

But, the reason I want the book is because during a lecture we were told about Wilson and Hanna's dysfunctional group roles. I searched the web for hours looking for their model, but could't find a thing. I was a little suspicious then, but just told my tutor my problem.

However, last night, during yet another extensive search, I came across an article from 1948 by Benne and Sheats...and low and behold, the vey same dysfunctional roles that we were told Wilson and Hanna came up with were there!! I have now contacted my tutor and suggested that it wasn't Wilson and Hanna that came up with this theory of group dynamics, but they referred to Benne and Sheat's work in their book.

I havent heard back from her yet, but I have a feeling I am right, in which case the lecturer who wrote the lecture didn't do her research

I will let you know

Wow, coathanger! You've out-researched your lecturer!

You should be feeling very smug
