Tantrumming toddler and dummy

It looks like our almost 20 month old ds is starting the terrible 2s! The tantrums hes had over the last few days have been quite something and the only thing that puts a stop to them is a dummy.

He is normally only allowed one at bed and nap times but I'm worried we are starting to extend this to 'oh we can take it out when we are downstairs' and 'we are only staying in today so he can have it a bit longer etc.

I really want to put a stop to this but I need some tips on how to stop a tantrum as we have a 3 month old who also gets upset whilst this is going on.

I've tried ignoring him, cuddling him, raising my voice, offering food, distracting with toys/tv/pointing out the window and nothing works. They just keep going and he gets more distressed.

I know this is likely to last a good while so I need to have a plan so any tips on dealing with tantrums gratefully received!

I don't think you can stop a tantrum, really. He's got to the point where he's lost the ability to be calm, and all you can do is weather it until he calms down again of distraction isn't working. As long as he's in a safe place I'd leave him to it, whilst not leaving him totally on his own.
