Sore red bottom in newborn... Help!

Hi

DD was born just six days ago and has a really red, chaffed, bottom, looks like it is painful although she's showing no signs that it is...

Is it normal to get bad reactions to nappies / changing etc. this soon? We are letting her bottom 'air' when we change her nappy.

She is being breastfed and that is going really well. She's doing 7 or 8 poos a day, at least, and LOADS of wees!

What are we doing wrong? Is this normal and how can we treat it? I hate seeing her bottom looking so sore! I've put a little Kamillosan on the area as i've heard that's good for it... any other advice?

Thanks so much!

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Sometimes babies can react to things you have eaten. DD used to get windy when i had onions.

airing it as much as possible is good
wipes can be very drying so try just cotton wool and water
also vaseline is a good barrier
could also be dry skin and a good aqueous cream could help
have a quick word with your HV

hi.my dd3(now 12 weeks)got pretty bad nappy rash for the first couple of weeks.i use bapanthen cream,i find it really good, but ive heard the one you mentioned is equally as good.
you are doing the right thing by letting it 'air' and putting cream on-not much else you can do really, but if it gets spotty or starts bleeding it could be thrush so i would take her to the doc.

Babies often seem to get sore at first with cloth, but I think it's more of a chapping than a real nappy rash. They seem to quickly toughen up, if you have loads of nappy free playtime, and then you shouldn't have any further problems.
Lavera do a very good natural nappy cream. I can send you some samples if you send me a s.a.e. PM me if you'd like some (and anyone eles who'd like some! - I have loads!)

you could try this - I Love it - brilliant for lots of things

here has paw paw ointment cheap

it is brilliant - I use the small tube and it goes a long way.

Metanium is great.

Not sure if you are using baby wipes or not. If you are - STOP! Just use water and cotton wool.

A great tip I got from MN when DD had nappy rash was to make a cup of chamomile tea and let it go cold, then use that instead of water to clean her bottom.

My newborn did so many poos we had the same problem (her bottom got so bad it ended up being slightly sticky with pus, it was quite distressing as she hated when we washed it with water).
In our case even keeping her out of nappies completely didn't help as she pooed constantly and the doctor prescribed a cream (some anti-fungal one or antibiotic I think) and metanium, and she was soon completely better.
We haven't had any problems since at 4 months she now only poos every 3 days or so!
