I applied to get onto an access course and was accepted today. I want to get into uni to do midwifery and understand there are vry few places.
I have an appointment next month with a woman at local maternity hosp to see about volunteering there. Of course I need to pass the course! lol but is there anything else I can do to help my chances of getting into uni?

do as much work experience as poss - pre and ante natal.

Read some books like Sheila Kitzinger.

Get a good referee for your uni appplication. you can apply for sept 2008 from this september.get your application in early.

thats all i can think of - oh and good luck, i loved my access course!

1- Do your research especially concerning the role of a midwife

2- Apply early- did you know that admissions tutors take on average 5 minutes to read applications in sept and oct and on average 1 minute per application from november onwards

3- Start planning and writing your personal statement NOW - remember most universities will have 600+ applicants all going for about 40 places-you need to stand out from the other people and the way you do that is in your personal statement-it needs to be shit hot-dont worry your access tutor will check it over and help you with it

4- Volunteer for anything- breastfeeding support, NCT, hospital, HCA etc etc

5- Familarise yourself with UCAS and the application process

6- Book to go to open days at your chosen universities- these pre-booked names are often recorded - on open days try to get a chance to speak with the admissions tutors and/or lecturers- that way if you get an interview you may get interviewed some one youve met before...
