How to dress 10-12 month baby in autumn and winter

Hi, my daughter will be 10 month soon and am wondering how to dress her when we go out in chilly automnal and wintry weather. We live in London. She crawls and stands everywhere but not walking yet.

I am thinking a long sleeves bodysuit, long trousers, a top/jumper, and an outer layer either cardi or jacket. And foot muff when in buggy. Does this sound ok?

Will she need thick socks?
She used wear a snowsuit when newborn; does she need another at this age?
Would a puffer jacket be useful?
I guess some sort shoes or booties as well.

I was too busy so missed the sale this summerConfused so will need to buy non sale items (or from eBay) so I don't want to buy too many.

Usual rule of thumb is one layer more than you are wearing.

I would just say vest, then l/s top with a jumper over the top. Pair of joggers/bottoms and socks. If raining put a coat on etc.

Most sales are still on, i've just stocked up in the teaco clothes sale for my 7 month old

H&M have loads of kids stuff in the sale online and if you are signed up to the H&M club you can get 15% off all the basics range

What you’re thinking sounds fine, I thought the extra layer thing was for younger babies, for a 10 month old I’d usually go with whatever I was wearing, plus the foot muff in the buggy to make up for the fact that they’re not moving. I’ve never needed to use a snow suit in London (was living there with a slightly younger baby last winter) but had a lighter coat and a warmer puffa type coat. Don’t buy shoes/booties now, if she’s walking which is likely by winter if she’s currently 10 months, then she’ll need her feet measuring and shoes bought to fit.

What they all said^. I tend to put a pair of tights - or even socks, then tights - under trousers for DD, that way she's warm and they won't fall off.

One more layer than you have/need was always my rule of thumb

Ds at that age wore leggings or joggers, a short sleeved vest, a long sleeved top, then a jumper if it was chilly. He had socks with rubber grips on the soles for cruising around, then he had a little padded jacket with a hood for going out, a warm hat, and the foot muff to keep his bottom half warm.

Footwear for outdoors was an issue, I ended up getting some fleecey lined waterproof booties off ebay as they were like gold dust to find in the shops! His feet were fine in the pram but I also used a sling, and they stuck out of the bottom and got cold. He also had a padded puddle suit for the coldest days. We have a dog though so were out no matter what the weather threw our way - you may not need that.

Thanks for the replies! Good to know sales are still on! Hope it's not too late for sizes!

Puddlesuits and layers underneath rather than a snowsuit and waterproof booties and mitts (H&M, stonz or some Scandi brands do them). Ideal for crawling/learning to walk/exploring outside in the winter before they are confident walkers.

Thanks for the thread OP, I also have a crawling 10mo London baby so all useful info for me too.

How do people get their baby to keep the hat and socks on? Ds just pulls them off at the first opportunity. He does the same with his bibs and sometimes his tops tooHmm

TroubledLichen · 27/08/2018 22:24

Keeping socks on- use tights instead (dark colours under trousers also work for boys) until they grow out of the pulling th off phase. Or barefoot at home if it’s warm enough and shoes on when going out if yours is walking.

Hat and mittens- old fashioned mittens on a string are great, JoJo Maman Bebe do them. Get a hat with a neck strap if yours pulls it off, DD had a great one last year from Boden. Or depending on your pram the footmuff might do the job for you, our one for the YoYo goes up to DD’s neck and tightens with a toggle so no way are her hands getting out of that!

Katescurios · 27/08/2018 22:48

Watch out for puddlesuits, lots are "showerproof" which are rubbish, look for "waterproof" and check out places like sports direct, we got one for about £9 last year. Lidl are great for kids waterproofs too.

Mine would wear short sleeved vest, joggers or leggings and long sleeved t shirt. Then either a cardi or coat depending on how cold and what we’re doing. Basically the same as me. Extra blanket maybe for the buggy just in case.

I had good luck with knee length kids socks that I got from amazon. They struggled to get them off and extra warmth for their legs outside. And hats with ties on

anniehm · 28/08/2018 11:50

A thinish snowsuit with space to wear a fleece under when it turns really cold or just all in one waterproof/wind proof again with space to layer underneath. Weather is so unpredictable here, last year very cold, some winters it's just rain and wind that are the problem.

anniehm · 28/08/2018 11:52

Should have said - there's a couple of Scottish brands that are good, outdoors shops are better than high street for rainwear

Heartofglass12345 · 28/08/2018 12:00

You can get things called sock ons that go over their socks to keep them on, my kids had hats with either Velcro or string that tied under their chinst 😊
