I have a toddler and find carrying my baby easier a lot of the time. I’ve been using a stretchy wrap but think he’s too heavy now really as he quickly slips down. He reLly is massive.
Like the look of the ergo but it is soooo expensive. Even second hand ones go for £70 plus. Can anyone recommend anything else that isn’t expensive yet won’t ruin my back?

Try them out. My DD wa sleep nearly 5 months and 75% for weight but 99.8% for height when I started to carry and I had no problems.

I liked the Manduca.

You need to try some really, it's so individual to you and your baby. Is there a local sling library?

I have a 98th centile lumpkin and personally I got on well with a Boba 4g. DH didn't like it at all though as it wouldn't sit on his hips. I tried a Manduca and was not a fan, but others loved it.

I think a soft structured carrier is your best bet with a larger baby, I too found stretchy wraps not ideal. I kept using my Boba until
DS was nearly two, and only stopped because he kept getting up and down every two minutes, and wanted to splash in the muddiest puddles out there then smear the mud all over me! So although they are quite expensive to buy, you can get your money's worth from them, then as long as they're in decent condition you can sell them on afterwards.

I have a Moby Aria which has lasted through two heavy boys. They don't make it any more but the Moby Comfort took its place and is almost identical but cheaper.

Thanks all. I’ve never heard of any of those so I will get researching. There is a sling library near me. They have a meeting in a couple of weeks. But I feel a bit shy about going! I’m not into any parenting philosophy really so feel like I’d probably be a bit out of place.

I am a member of the local sling Facebook parenting group and it is the least Unjudgemental place for parenting. It is full of people who only slinged for a little bit or who don’t anymore and a few people who have never used slings.

You don’t have to parent in any particular way to use a sling. It is just a method of transport.

FranticallyPeaceful · 25/08/2018 13:27

Definitely rose & rebellion. You can use them from birth to 5. Strong, comfortable and reliable

I really love this

Goes up to 20kg/44lbs

I had a 100th+ centile baby. The sling library recommended a lillebaby. Loved it. Ive used it for both my big babies till 18 months

Cachailleacha · 25/08/2018 18:21

I used an Ergo with my toddler, so would recommend that or a similar carrier. You could resell it when you finish with it.

I used a stretchy wrap until 6 months (7.5 kg), then a ring sling with my baby upright on my hip until around 12 months (9kg). A ring sling might not suit your baby though, as I think they may be heavy to carry on the front, and too young to carry on your hip. A carrier like an Ergo you can also use on your back once your baby is 6 months or so.

PotteringAlong · 25/08/2018 18:25

Please please don’t worry about going to your sling library - rock up and try lots on. That’s what they’re for!

scaredofthecity · 25/08/2018 18:29

My boy was huge and I used an ergo. He was over the very top centile line. I still carried him miles in my trusty ergo, up until he was about 2 I think.

mindutopia · 25/08/2018 18:58

Any decent ergonomic carrier should be fine. Or a woven wrap. We have both and I carried my daughter in them until she was nearly 3.

readysetcake · 25/08/2018 19:31

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions! I’m being silly about the library, I’ve always struggled with going to new groups/places, but seems crazy to spend so much without trying them first. I’ll put my brave face on and go along to the next one. Thanks again everyone!

Another vote for the ergo.
I have both the ergo baby and the ergo 360 and much prefer the original ergo baby...

Almostthere15 · 25/08/2018 20:58

It's worth going to s sling meet, as carrying has become more mainstream I think they are diverse. But if you really don't fancy it some sling libraries do one to one meetings/ phone consultations and rentals.

I love my ergo, the manduka is pretty much the same though. My husband found the ergo sits too high on his back which is why it's worth trying them out

BananaRumpus · 26/08/2018 19:28

We had the Lillebaby 4 seasons and loved it. So easy to put on and adjust and our dd always seemed so.comfy in it. She has consistently been 91st percentile for height and weight
