Newborn baby possibly acid reflux?

Hi everyone :)

FTM here to my amazing and gorgeous DS (6 days old). During the day he is a real dream. So easy and barely cries. However in the evening and at night I am finding he is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and hard to settle. From reading things online (in the hours sat up with him at night!) I believe he may have newborn acid reflux. Can anyone see if they agree if I list some symptoms?

  • he has quite a lot of gas and hiccups throughout the day
  • when BF he comes off the latch up to 3 times each breast each feed (although sometimes stays on better)
  • after a feed he tends to look really quite uncomfortable. He will tense his body and throw his head back and clench his fists
  • he doesn't like being in his crib at night. He will look obviously in discomfort and will be wriggling and writhing around. After a few minutes of this he will then cry and want to feed even if he has literally just fed
  • he cluster feeds in the evening and at bedtime and can be on and off the breast constantly for hours
  • he can sound quite wheezy after a feed
  • he spews up milk probably about 50% of the time after a feed

Do people have any experiences of this or any advice that could help please? I hate to see him in pain it breaks my heart :(

Does anyone know if there is any over the counter medication I can buy this bank holiday weekend with the doctor surgery being closed?

TIA and apologies for the long post!!

Most of it could be absolutely normal newborn behaviour. The only thing that really rings alarm bells is the wheezing. Have a read of this from Allergy UK and this from Kellymom. Does this sound like what’s going on OP?

Congratulations on your new LO too Thanks

Thank you for your reply. It is reassuring to know it may well just be normal. Most of the stuff I listed I would be inclined to believe is normal but I can just tell he is in pain/uncomfortable when I lay him down and this is the bit that bothers me. I can cope with the regular feeding etc but I hate to see him in discomfort :(

The first link didn't seem to take me to anything.....the second link could well have something to do with it. I hadn't considered an allergy. Although I really don't eat a lot of the suspect food groups :/

With regards to the wheezing I don't want to make that sound like a huge problem and it certainly isn't really regular. It is for a few minutes maybe after a feed when I lay him on my chest. Does that sound worrying still :/

Sorry about the first link OP. Hopefully this one will work. It’s the wheezing that would be of concern to me but read through the symptoms and see what you think Smile

Some things that might help him to settle in the drip are propping the top end up slightly. Using a tshirt that DH has worn as the sheet, the stinkier the better. Don’t use one of yours as itcwill just smell of milk. Swaddling and white noise.
