Toys for flight - entertaining 13 month old 4.5 hr flight.

We are going on holiday in 4weeks, my DS will be 13 months old. He is into everything, and super nosey. Whenever we go somewhere he likes to check out every room, anyway. I am adopting the idea of wrapping up new toys for him to open on the flight to keep him amused, but just don't know what to wrap up really.
Any good ideas or even ideas that dont involve wrapping up. ( we don't allow iPads or phones yet) any ideas please ?

Toys involving putting things into/out of a bag or box

Galt water magic (he may be too young)

Books with lift the flap etc

Stickers (the removable kind) that he can stick around him

Hand puppet

Brush up your peekaboo and incey wincey spider routines

Snacks. Lots and lots. Forget big meals and just feed snacks. Also something he can chew/suck for take off and landing

I really suggest that, if all else fails, you relax your no screen rule for the sake of your fellow passengers (so download some toddler apps just in case - ones that work on silent. Koi pond is good).

Good luck !

Lift-the-flap books are good at that sort of age, I think. The more flaps to lift, the better! And you can talk about the pictures, too: oh look, the horsey is eating the apple! The apple is red!
Also, if you can find a "busy board" toy, with coloured wheels to spin, dials to fiddle with, patches of material with different textures such as satin and velvet. They are usually aimed at children younger than 13 months I think, but if your baby hasn't seen it before, it might engage him for a while.

I'd suggest one of the orchard toys simple card puzzles. DD was given these for her birthday and they have provided hours and hours of entertainment. Even just transferring them in an out of the box is fun at this age.

Only problem is you'll spend a lot of time scrambling around under the seats for dropped bits, but I think this is unavoidable for entertainment for such a long time and can probably managed as long as you are helping. You could always remove half of them from the box for the flight so that there are fewer pieces.

Books of different types: DD has spent hours on end looking at the Ahlberg Babies Catalogue book.

I feel similar re screens and DD doesn't watch TV but I have to say that for your survival and the comfort of those around you, in this particular case I'd make use of the screen if it keeps them happy.

I just saw this in the Mothercare sale and thought of you...

It's a 'magnetic shapes board'.

Raised stickers from Poundland or similar. Water magic.

Agree, always have a electronic device in reserve!

I've got an almost 13 month old. I'd relax the no iPad rule and also get the travel aquadoodle which comes in a little carry bag. Even if your DS can't draw yet you can still entertain him by fearing and playing on it. Also there's no fiddly bits for him to throw or drop around the seat.

butlerswharf · 25/08/2018 10:15

Ffs drawing not fearing.

Smurfy23 · 25/08/2018 12:48

Meant to say I also dont let dd sit and watch screens when she could be playing but on the flight she went on it a couple of that it was a choice between that or her trying to pull the hair of the lady in front of us!!

Tigger001 · 25/08/2018 19:31

Thanks everyone, yes I may need to relax the no screen rule as last resort, as he doesn't even watch to at home.
@INeedNewShoes thank you so much that looks great fun and magnetic and most importantly quiet lol
I will definitely look into the aqua doodle thing, looks great, and this could also help his drawing over the 10 days we are away
I just don't want to be one of them people I used to hate with an annoying toddler, but I now realise sometimes that just can't be helped. Oh how we learn when we walk in others shoes lol thanks again everyone and sank further suggestions still Welcome 😄😄

We did the same length flight with 12 month old recently. Took toys, not interested. He only wanted the plastic bottle of the man opposite. Luckily he obliged. Also, a giant bag of animal biscuits from duty free. We basically fed him for the whole journey!

MrsGB2225 · 25/08/2018 19:37

1 tub of Play doh
Reusable stickers for plane windows
2 piece puzzle
Finger puppets
Loads of snacks
