Hello all,

I'm just looking for some reassurance really as my little one was weighed this week and has put on 2oz in 5 weeks. She's now 15lbs 9oz. She was on the 8th percentile around 10 months but has dropped again. When born she was on the 50th percentile.

She's very active crawls super fast and never sit still always wanting to be put on the floor. She's constantly practicing her standing still holding onto things, but not actually taking any steps as yet. She also doesn't eat much at all and is still on around 5 bottles a day, but has 3 meals a day and the odd snack but tends not to eat much and just wants her milk. Some meals are better than others.

Anyway, I think I would be ok and worrying less if -

  1. she was eating well.
  2. not dropping further percentile wise.

On the plus side she hasn't actually lost any weight - just been a slow weight gainer since 4 months.
Due to start nursery so hoping she'll start to eat a bit more.
She's had some blood tests at 10 months and all ok nothing to worry about.
I think I'm just worrying again as she rapidly approaches 1 year and she is just so tiny compared to most babies I see.
Is any else in a similar situation?
TIA xxx

My 8 month DD is similar. Since she was 5 months she's only gained 2lbs and currently weights 16lb 4oz's. She's not lost any weight, she's just a slow gainer.

Your DD sounds very active, so she's probably burning off most of what she's eating. And if your HV doesn't seem concerned, then your daughter is probably just petite.

You could try dropping her feeds to maybe 3 a day and increasing her meals. I do 3 meals, 3 snacks and 3 bottles.

@myotherbagisgucci thanks for your reply. Yeah it's funny that some babies gain steadily while others seem to keep growing loads. I did read somewhere that their weight does start the slow down a little around 7-8 months mainly because they are active more. I'm already in the system at the hospital seeing a pediatrician not due to weight gain but CPMA, however it turned out she doesn't have the allergy but on a separate note they would like to check hows she's doing weight wise, so will go back next month.

Today was a better day food wise. (Some tiny pieces of chicken were eaten and mackerel pate) I'm trying to decrease the bottles as well or she takes so long to drink half or finish her last feed at night as she won't keep still and just wants to be put down to crawl.
Sounds great you are on snacks now as well, I find introducing them hard with bottles and meals it all takes so long and of course you want to get out of the house and fit in 2 naps with my little one. I do the odd snack here and there, but need to get more consistent. I've been waiting for the meal intake to increase more then work on snacks x

My friends baby was really small and looked tiny for years. Later on they gave her high protein shakes as GP said she wasn’t grown quickly enough. She looks like any normal 7 year old now. The GP or HV will keep you right if you have concerns

Just ditch the milk and snacks, she's never going to be hungry enough to eat well if she's full of milk. It's normal and healthy to be a bit hungry from time to time.

She's likely to be a bit unhappy for a while, but in the long term, it will be in her best interests to do so.

Parenting is about picking your battles, but this is definitely one that I'd pick and be sure to win.
