Holiday with newborn

Hi everyone. I have recently found out me and my husband are expecting our first child. We booked a holiday earlier on this year to go to Greece next May for a week with family members all inclusive. We booked this months before conceiving and our newborn ( if they arrive on the due date) will only be 6/7 weeks old when we fly. I’m obviously very dubious about this but my partner seems to think we will be okay? Has anyone else been abroad with a baby so young and would you recommend it? In an ordinary circumstance we would of course just cancel the holiday but it’s fully paid for and my sister in laws children are going on the ‘children go free’ as we have said one will be in our room, so if we cancel no one will be able to go.
Thanks in advance Smile

Hi Op,
I haven't been away with a newborn but it can be done. To be honest if you're breastfeeding, it will be so much easier - food on tap. I would imagine bottles and formula would be a complete faff abroad to be honest along with the sterilising of bottles. Having said that, there are bottles you can buy that can be put in the Microwave to sterilise. Having said that, I think you need to do what you feel comfortable doing and that may not be known until the baby arrives and how happy you feel travelling?

It's very overwhelming with your first especially in the early weeks, but 6 to 7 weeks starts to feel a little better. As I said you may just have to agree with your family that you will decide after the baby arrives.
My little one is nearly a 1 year and I'm a first time mum, but can still remember those early weeks. I also had a difficult birth, so again something to factor in later on.
Congratulations btw xxx

We took our first from Australia to visit family in the U.K. via Singapore when she was 8weeks.

I was breastfeeding which I think was the key to its easiness. We just packed plenty clothes and nappy, and carried her in a sling.

At the time it was terrifying, we were going for a wedding my husband was best man at, so it was sort of set in stone. It all panned out fine though. Also knowing we were going from our home, to my parents, was good.

It's a hard one. Practically, small baby on holiday is fine. They feed, they sleep, you doze on a lounger etc. Baby might be late so you might have a 4/5 week old. You might have a great delivery, but you might not. And having your SIL's kid in your room along with a baby doesn't sound like fun.

Could you swap your place with anyone?

I think the younger they are the better. We took DD to Portugal at 4 months and Canada and America at 7 months. She was amazing for both holidays, but I found Portugal loads easier.

If I were you, I'd go and I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time with your family and new baby.

I think it all depends on your birth and the baby. Your recovery might take a while - the doctor's check is at 6 weeks or it might be easy. All babies are different too.
Other things to consider are - are you prepared to get a passport sorted that quickly? You'll need to register the birth first.
Check with your insurer they are happy for you to fly potentially 4 weeks post partum.
The lack of vaccinations would also concern me as aeroplanes are germ pits but that might just be me being paranoid!

I personally wouldn't have wanted to but everyone is different and obviously plenty of people do. Check
The cancellation policy for your holiday. You'll probably get a good whack of the money back if you cancel well in advance.

Hi OP. I went to Morocco with dd when she was 8 weeks. It was lovely - a bit of sun, dd slept better and we had a lovely time. She even slept the entire way on the plane both sides :)

From the newborn point of view - way easier to travel the younger they are. Just get the passport sorted ASAP. Also, you can't book them on to the flight till they are born. Biggest issue will be if you are recovered sufficiently to travel comfortably.
We took our son on his first flight at around 3 months and it was the easiest flight with him. Gets more difficult the older they get!!

We took my daughter to Florida when she was 8 weeks old, was very easy! Easier then we thought it would be. We'd already booked the holiday before I knew I was pregnant, I'm glad we decided to go and not cancel.

Thank you everyone for your replies! I guess it’s all circumstantial. Obviously I fully plan on having a natural birth but that can never be guaranteed either. I also intend to breast feed so I guess like you have all said that would make it easier too. Although I love the idea of the holiday of course baby comes first and I think it will be a case of waiting until he/she is here and making that decision.
Thankyou lovely peopleSmile
