What do you give your children for breakfast?

DS1 (18mths) will usually eat a waffle or some cheese on toast or some yoghurt with a little honey and sliced banana or pancakes if DH is around. I wanted to give him some cereal instead as a change but was shocked to read that almost every cereal i chose online for tomorrow's delivery had glucose-fructose syrup in - chose Tesco's own rice krispies in the end i think.

Also to find that it's also in petit filous. Do you think the amounts are too small to cause much harm? What do you give your children for breakfast? Some new healthy ideas would be great.

Our primary school is Fairtrade and pre-school soon will be.

DCs eat rice crispies, cornflakes, Oatibix, Waitrose raison wheats, toast, toasted bagels, croissants. Only my 2yo eat porridge.

Occasionally we have scrambled eggs (from our own hens, natch).

usually toast and yogurt but weekends they have cereal, its normally whichever own brand version i think looks least sickly.

cereal - choice of weetabix, shreddies or sometimes cornflakes.

There's suger in all those but not that much. DD sometimes has ready brek too.
Supermarket own brands all btw not nestle of course.
They all also have fruit - a satsuma, an apple, some grapes, some tomatoes. And a glass of milk. Not bad really.

the ones i have been to are sunday luchtime but are heavily alcohol orientated

have no idea where farnham is though....will go mulitmap it now and see how far away you are.

mine will only eat readybrek/porridge with ground pumkin and sunflower seed (instead of sugar/honey) for breakfast or they compalin they are hungry all morning (plus as they normally have bread with lunch it just keeps breakfast free from wheat)

am always recommending it: "what should i feed my baby" by S Olivier - it is an excellent book for ensuring you have ideas about variety, although i decided that if readybrek fills them it won't harm them to get just one type of breakfast served (with the occasional chnage) just ensure the variety is there at all other meal times

when they have yoghurt i give them plain Yeo Valley (or plain goats milk) with chopped fresh fruit and they love it. they have never had petit filous mind so never got a taste for the sugar.

they do have home made cakes though so it's not that they are not completely free of sugar in their diet!

they like toast with either peanut paste or vegemite. On weekend - sometimes bacon and eggs or pancakes. Dd2 will have cereal sometimes but they are mainly toast girls.

DS (20 mths) eats:

cereal (cheerios, cornflakes, weetabix)
porridge
wholemeal toast
waffles (frozen, organic)
pancakes (homemade)
bagel
fruit (banana, strawberries, grapes etc)
Yoghurt (organic)

I am careful to make sure that food I buy for him doesn't contain high fructose corn syrup. A lot of organic brands don't use it, although it tends to make the product more expensive.

Weekdays we rotate porridge, weetabix, readybrek & now and then mini shredded wheat, shreddies, sugar-free muesli, all with banana (DS only eats cereal with banana, the fusspot).Then something bready - usually a slice of wholewheat toast or a muffin or bagel with cream cheese or honey. usually has some fruit, too.

Wekends anything goes - pancakes, waffles, cheese on toast, eggy bread (he won't eat eggs any other way...grrr), sausages, fruit salad & yoghurt...

p.s. I buy big pots of natural or plain Greek yoghurt and add fruit puree rather than buy the sugary, expensive stuff aimed at kids. And I am soooo not a 'make from scratch' kind of mum, but its easy peasy to buy fruit in the big frozen bags, defrost small amounts at a time and whizz in moulie (sp?) then add to yog.

Home made muesli. Its soft with lots of yoghurt in it. We all have this nearly everyday and then put whatever fruit we have in it.

DD normally has bitesize shredded wheat with raisins or other chopped fruit.
Sainsbury's do an own brand puffed wheat that is also 100% whole wheat with no other added stuff which she loves.
If I can't be bothered with bowls and cereal she has marmite or peanut butter on toast.

Oh, and she nicks my coco pops if she can get close enough, but they aren't meant for her

dd (3) has cheerios, rice krispies multi-grain (muddles, by their old name), weetabix princess stars, coco pops occasionally, rice krispies occasionally, toast and jam/peanut butter occasionally.

ds (8months) has baby cereal, weetabix, shreddies soaked in milk (for finger food), ready brek

We eat readybreak, oatabix, shredded wheat, though do mix in the unhealthy ones in sometimes too. Some cereals that I thought were healthy weren't.

During the week they have cereal: Readybrek, Weetabix, Shredded Wheat, Shreddies, Cornflakes or rice crispies - nothing with chocolate or frosting! Plus a glass of juice or milk. If they are still hungry they have a box of raisins.

On the weekend they can have chocolate spread on toast if they want it but often choose to still have cereal.

Ds1, 2.9 - Weetabix with jam, half my Tescos own flakes, and half his dad's toast and pate. Eggs and bacon at the weekend with his dad.

DS2, 10 months - Weetabix, banana, toast with jam, satsuma, anything his brother leaves.

other days:
pancakes (frozen Aunt Bessie) with yogurt and strawberries,
egg and toast
Porridge
Bacon sandwich
Oatibix, or 'Just Right'

banana's and yoghurt
beans on wholemeal toast
scrambled egg and toast
weetabix
toast and fruit spread (st dalfour? get in sainsburys)
raisin wheats or very occasionally weeto's
oat crunchy cereal/chopped fruit/yoghurt

dd (age 3) also likes smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels

Nutella on white bread. Sigh.

Used to be healthier.

Poached egg and toast at weekends. Doesn't actually EAT the egg though - just dips his toast in. Sometimes bacon and/or suasage too.

I like your breakfast choices, Blu.

dd will have Cheerios, ReadyBrek and honey, toast with jam, peanut butter, honey or Vegemite. Plus a drink of juice or milk.

ds will have milk and that's it.

At the weekend it might be something like a croissant, a bagel, a pain au raisin/chocolat or a hot cross bun.

Think I'll have to expand the breakfast repertoire.
