Please help! My son tries to wee on potty but it goes everywhere!

As subject says..

This is my first post, I was hoping for some advice.

I am trying to potty train my 2 1/2 year old son.
When he does try to go on his potty his wee just goes all over the floor in front of the potty.

Is it the potty? It's just a standard one from Tesco.

Or what shall I do? My son seems to find it confusing that even when he makes the effort not to wee on the floor and sits on the potty like I teach him, his wee still ends up everywhere BLESS!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

We had a Tommee Tippee one that was quite big and had enough space at the front to make sure he was pointing down!
At the nursery I work in, some of the boys struggle with the potty and find it easier to sit on it back to front which seems to work.

Sooner they wee standing up, the better imo

I found potty chairs far easier for the DCs to use, rather than 'standard' potties. Plus part of learning to use the potty was remembering to push their willy down when they wee'd.

This is the potty chair I had with the DSs.

bran · 04/06/2007 17:52

I had this problem with ds and I ended up with a Tommee Tippee one like Posey. I also remind him to push down his willy when sitting. He quite likes standing to wee and has developed reasonable aim (well as good as his father anyway ). He stands on a step to do this so he's above the loo weeing down.

serenity · 04/06/2007 17:53

DD had that 'royal' potty chair, spy kid - fanfare was ruddy annoying, we stopped putting batteries in it before she even started to use it properly (nice potty though)

fireflyfairy2 · 04/06/2007 17:57

We tell ds to make sure willy is looking at the floor!

Or turning him back to front might help as it is higher at the back??

Make sure hs is sitting far enough back on the potty also

tassis · 04/06/2007 18:01

as already suggested you need a bigger potty and a mantra "point peepee down"

you could just try him on the toilet

Othersideofthechannel · 04/06/2007 18:05

Or try standing up at the toilet (on a box or plastic step). I have seen a tall 2 yr old manage this.

beansprout · 04/06/2007 18:10

Is he sitting far back enough?

this one has a good high front
make sure he tucks his willy down, and my advice is to move to a stool and standing wee asap!!!

archiesmummy · 04/06/2007 18:57

There is a "weeman" little boys urinal to buy from BabyKind.
I bought it and it attaches easily to the toilet and hangs off the seat so little boys can stand up and wee.
Then you just tip it over the toilet (still attached) and flush.

It looks great, but DS hasn't actually tried it yet obviously I was a bit too over eager to get him trained..

mrszerrouk · 04/06/2007 19:00

Hi everyone, thank you so much - I can't believe how helpful you all are, and so quickly!

I am not too keen on paying £20 for a potty, though the guard thingy does look like its what i need.

Toilet proposers - I am not too keen on trying to get him to use he toilet yet... He is still having far more incidents of standing there and weeing on the floor and mydownstairs is all hard flooring, whereas upstairs (where the bathroom is) is all carpeted so I would rather we stayed downstairs for now

We have a chair potty already but the one we have still has a very low front, think it is a Mothercare one.

I am very interested in the Tommy Tippee potty from Amazon, does anyone know where I can get one on the high street? The postage will almost double the price but they don't have it on Mothercare or Toys r us website so guess they don't have it in store. This would be the best solution for us I think as we could then carry on as we have been and concentrate on that method.

I will try and get him to point his willy down when weeing but I don't think he will get what I am talking about yet and I don't want to interfere with him at this early stage when even getting him to sit on the potty is a major achievement LOL!

Look here for more info about the Weeman.

mrszerrouk · 04/06/2007 19:14

Thanks archiesmummy, I never knew there was such a thing - has anyone here actually HAD experience of using this I am quite intrigued

I bought my Tommee Tippee from John Lewis.

Posey · 04/06/2007 20:21

I got my Tommee Tippee one in an independent chemist.

bran · 06/06/2007 16:13

Actually, I've just checked mine and it's a Baby Bjorn not a Tommee Tippee. I think they're a very similar design though.

Oblomov · 06/06/2007 16:20

"Tuck him in" - or similar. That means make sure your willy is pointing down. Has worked for us.
We used a big potty chair aswell.

Dragonhart · 06/06/2007 16:47

I had exactly this problem with ds at the start of the week and I found getting ds to widen his legs and look at himself weeing solved it.

As he looks at his willy, he leans forward, and his willy 'dangles' more and it automaticaly stopped going over the edge iyswim!

Hope this helps you. And good luck!

mrszerrouk · 01/07/2007 11:10

Thank you again everyone for all your advice.

I decided to go for the Tommee Tippee saddle potty and looked everywhere for it but couldn't find it anywhere on the high street!

I ordered a watch from Amazon in the sale which entitled me to free delivery so I looked on there again for the potty and they are now selling them themselves for £2.99, whereas it was a private seller before.

Just got it last week and it is a much better shape so I would recommend it for little boys!

Oh yes, sorry for the late reply - all our internet history disappeared so it has been murder trying to find this thread!

A very cheap option for boys is Asda's own brand potty for about £1, oval shape with a nice high front.
