Dc2 has just turned 3 and still has a very limited vocabulary - maybe a dozen words not included names which with the exception of mama and papa aren't clear unless you know what he means.

He clearly understands when people speak to him, has met all his other milestones on target and has had several hearing tests all of which have given the all ok.
He seems to be completely normal except the lack of speech.

He's getting much better at communicating now and we're getting a lot better at understanding him but he still gets frustrated when we don't understand, particularly when he's tired and it's heartbreaking seeing him get upset over something that should be so simple.

I just want to know if anybody is in the same boat?

Can you push for a speech assessment, rather than a language one? My DS had a speech delay rather than a language delay, which meant that medical and education staff kept dismissing my concerns, as he was a clear communicator, just not in Words! It’s really worth pushing for, though, if just to ensure that the physical apparatus is working as it should. (My DS was prem, so had some difficulties actually making the sounds.)

Ask your health visitor for a speech assessment referral. There are good websites but equally they can raise the fear factor, so a professional is best for understanding

That sounds very similar to my son, who has verbal dyspraxia. Definitely push your health visitor to organise a speech assessment, especially as he is starting school next year
