Freaking out. Bubbas blocked nose

At night, my 3 week old struggles really badly with a stuffy nose.
It's currently to the point where he will struggle to breathe, he.his breath for a few seconds, choke and spit up.
I lay awake for hours listening to him or trying to help him.
I have tried a nose squidger thingy to suck gunk out but nothing comes out.
Tried a piece of tissue to see if I can clean his nose a bit, tried putting a blanket under the mattress to prop him up a little.
He breathes ok for about 30 seconds the struggles.

What can I do to help him? It's freaking me out every time He goes quiet.

Put a little vicks on his clothes.

Go in the bathroom and run the shower on hot for five minutes with doors and windows closed. Then take him into the bathroom to breathe in the steam for a couple of minutes - always helped to clear my baby's nose. Don't stay in too long though, as you don't want him to overheat.

What about using an electric vapouriser? Can get them in Boots, really help, we all still use them when we have a cold.

Some babies are just quite snuffly - it’s usually nothing to worry about. Have you discussed with your HV or GP?

NoProbLlama78 · 19/08/2018 05:53

try salt drops. at that age I used to drip them just under dd's nostrils and lean her back a bit to tip them in

TeddyIsaHe · 19/08/2018 05:54

Dd was like this. I used a nose sucker that was one end for her nose and one for my mouth (there’s a filter) which was much more effective than a bulb one. You can also try snufflebabe, or saline nasal drops which are both fine to use from birth (no vicks on a 3 week old’s clothing!)

It’s really normal and nothing to worry about, it will clear up in a couple of weeks or so.

Steam in the bathroom trick followed by squirting a little Breastmilk up the nose worked wonders for us

Spam88 · 19/08/2018 07:13

Yes to saline drops, definite no to vicks though! Shouldn't use anything menthol on a newborn, their airway is far too delicate.

confusedandemployed · 19/08/2018 07:15

Do Calpol do a newborn room plug in vaporiser? I seem to remember using one for DD, and it seemed to help her.

WooYa · 19/08/2018 07:17

I used Snufflebabe. It's like Vicks but no as strong so okay for babies. I put it on a bib and tied it near him (far away where he can't grab it but close enough so he breathes it in).

flumpybear · 19/08/2018 07:18

Saline drops and I used to keep a folded towel tender the mattress to slightly elevate the head in the cot as it helps too

Only slightly elevated though

cookielove · 19/08/2018 07:24

Snufflebabe is ok from 3 months! So don't use that or Vicks!!

We used saline drops then the sucker, the drops loosened it all and the sucker got it out! We also had the one with the filter!

I’m not sure if it’s the done thing in the UK, but elsewhere I’ve lived the technique for clearing blocked noses is to squirt a whole syringe of saline forcibly up one nostril. All the snot comes pouring out the other nostril.

Saline spray.
