Baby rolling in cot HELP!!

My DD will be 5 months on Sunday.
Since around 3.5 months she has been able to confidently roll from her back to her front. At first she was just doing this during her time on the mat but now she's doing it in her sleep too. It really worries me

I rang the health visitor, her advice was, as baby can't yet roll front to back, the safest thing to do is to keep waking up in the night to roll her back, which I have been doing.

It's been nearly 6 weeks and I think I average about 3 hours broken sleep per night if I'm lucky. The rolling her back wakes her up and it takes ages for her to settle again.

We do over an hour of tummy time per day to help her try to learn to roll back but she's not interested in it.

Any advice or stories welcome... I'm sleeping less than she did as a newborn!

Remember even in the 80s when they used to advise people to put babies on their fronts to sleep (they thought they might choke if on their backs) and everyone smoked in the house with the baby and babies were normally in their own rooms from v early on - basically the opposite of all 3 of the most important ones today - still more than 99% of babies were perfectly fine. It is a tiny minority who suffer a cot death and you're already following all of the other guidelines. A baby who rolls of their own accord is not something to be frightened about.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Still feel nervous but I think tonight I'm going to try to get some sleep and if I happen to wake up and she is on her front I'll turn her but I'll have to trust she will be ok.

Hopefully I'll feel less anxious after tonight!

Good luck OP. Am sure you all will be fine. Try to relax.

She is at the totally normal age where babies start to adjust their sleeping positions. I would t give this a second thought. The idea of sleeping babies in their fronts to reduce the SIDS risk is based around keeping their noses and mouths clear to breathe. By 5 months old babies can wriggle about and turn their heads easily to keep the airway clear.

DS started moving onto his side and then front at about 4 months (I think). I remember getting worried and barely sleeping at first when he did it, and then decided to trust my instincts that he could turn his head and would be fine. We even put him down on his front for a while as it seemed to help him get to sleep. He's now 8.5 months and is usually put down on his side, and then moves round the cot and sleeps in all sorts of positions (including a sort of downward facing dog) over the course of the night. I know it's hard to relax but as other people have said I think it's normal for babies to like different ways of sleeping. Good luck with it, and hope you're sleep gets better soon.
