Cow & Gate formula

DD2 is 2 weeks tomorrow she is currently on cow & gate formula, she struggles getting more than 1-5-2oz in her at a time as we think she suffers with wind/ pains in her tummy. She really tenses up & thrashes about when she gets to a certain point on the bottle & struggles to take anymore. She can go anywhere between 2.5-4 hours between feeding try waking to give her a feed but sometimes she just isnt interested. It comes across as she wants more but just isn't able to as she is in pain. We are using infacol & the TT anti colic bottles which doesn't seem to be helping much.
Had the health visitor out today who was absolutely useless & didn't give us any advice at all. Told us to go the gp?? Hmm
So I was wondering do you think we should consider changing her formula or just sticking it out until (hopefully) she grows out of it this wind?

I used infacol with feeds ( not all of them) and really helped!

Tinks15 · 16/08/2018 17:21

@kshaw I'm using infacol & it hasnt made much difference.

By all means try changing the formula but I don’t know if it’s that uncommon for them to only take 1.5-2oz at that age. My daughter did for ages and I was told some babies are just smackers by the health visitor

Mam anti colic bottles are great. My baby is 15 weeks and only just increased to taking 3oz at a time, like the PP said some babies just snack.

Congratulations

Tinks15 · 16/08/2018 17:34

Thanks @Caspiana I read all these things & get told by health visitor she should be taking a bit more makes me slightly worried, but I guess every baby is different. I wish for the life of me I could remember what DD1 was taking at that age she was windy also though Sad.

My ds started on cow and gate first stage and it really didn't agree with him. He would also cry out from tummy pain and thrash around. I tried infacol, colic granules and colief, none really helped. I changed him to cow and gate comfort milk and it worked wonders for him. He is now nearly 6 months and is still on comfort milk even though his gas problems stopped around 12 weeks.

Mam anti colic bottles saved my life! I struggled like you with DD and wind/not eating a lot. I spent a fortune changing bottles. Then I tried the mam ones when she was 7 weeks and the difference was instant! I only wish I had used them from the very start!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/08/2018 22:23

How heavy is LO and how much formula are they having in 24 hours OP?

myotherbagisgucci · 16/08/2018 22:41

MAM bottles are the absolute best!! They not only helped reduce my DD's
colic and reflux, they're also self sterilising!

Tinks15 · 16/08/2018 22:42

Yeah I do hear a lot about MAM anti colic bottles may be I should look into giving them a try.

Hi @JiltedJohnsJulie I think you commented on my other post DD is 8lb 3oz, there is no consistent pattern how much formula she is taking it can vary that's the thing. Sometimes she will have 1oz other times she will neck 2.5oz that would take a bit of time getting that into her though as she is uncomfortable, thrashing about etc.

Sorry Tinks, only just realised irs you Blush

It doesn’t reality matter how much she has in one feed, despite what the carton would lead you to believe, it’s the total amount over 24 hours that yiu need to count Smile

Angeliki159 · 16/08/2018 22:47

Sorry to jump on your thread. My 2 week old DS is also on cow and gate first formula.
Over the past few days he has been suffering badly from wind and hiccups. He cries out and thrashes around until he falls asleep.
We have tried belly rubs, bicycle legs, sitting upright after feeding, walking after feeds, winding for 15+ mins.
He often indicates that he wants another bottle but barely has any when we give it to him.
He spits up a lot of his formula and doesn't poo for a couple of days at a time (Apparently that's normal)
I'm thinking, like you, it's the formula not agreeing with him.

Would you guys suggest trying the C&G comfort or a totally different brand?

Breaks my heart seeing him so uncomfortable and not being able to help him!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/08/2018 22:52

Angel I know a lot of babies are currently struggling with Aptamil and it’s made in the same factory as Cow & Gate. I’d swap to a totralky different brand, maybe Aldi or Hipp Organic? If that doesn’t work, I’d speak to yiuou GP about the possibility of CMPASmile

Just going to put a slightly different perspective. Google 4th trimester and purple crying to get a bit more of an insight into normal newborn behavior. We are, naturally, very quick to assume that things are wrong with our babies when actually we don’t really know. Wind is normal - we all have it! It’s about babies getting used to the feel of their bodies digesting milk which they haven’t had to do for 9 months. It’s interesting to read how many people experience similar things with their babies and report that infacol, colief , gaviscon etc etc don’t work. Maybe because it’s a different problem to fix?

I post this link a lot but I think it is highly worthy of consideration.

Might be worth joining the Boots parent club if you have an advantage card as they often have an offer on for a free MAM bottle or pack of breast pads (you get to choose one or the other)

rubyroot · 17/08/2018 14:42

I'm using HIPP Organice which I find a lot better than cow and gate and aptamil and its cheaper I believe.

pacempercutiens · 17/08/2018 22:44

My doctor said it takes newborns a month to get used to a formula change

rubyroot · 18/08/2018 10:17

Not just newborns!

Have to say I don't really like the stuff. My 7 month old is on 50% formula and 50% b milk and he's still pretty pukey, but less pukey than how he was on aptamil- and thats before they made the changes.
