so are bumbeano (or whatever they're called) still the slimmest and most absorbant or are these better...............still not ordered anything yet!

Bambineo are still reeeeeeeeeeally slim and absorbant - these are slightly slimmer (less layers) and dry faster, but are less absorbant.

(that is the lights) - the bamboo standard ones are slightly bulkier than bambineo, but are possibly slightly more absorbant depending on how you fold them both.

Flame, I'm having trouble with my bambineos and the hard water - would an ordinary quick flip be less likely to get crunchy than a bamboo one? Really liking the midnight blue. Is the aplix nice and soft as I was a bit put off by the aplix bambineos but would like to buy more dp-able nappies, he gets the nippa wrong every time!

Flame · 04/06/2007 21:35

I think the aplix is about the same hardness

Bamboo is the fabric that stays softest in all the various waters, so I think that the cotton quick flip is going to get just as crunchy. For one to say soft you'd be better with quick flip lights - the outer is brushed cotton and is soooo soft its lovely, and where its not got the loops it doesn't get so crunchy. It is only nippa though which would be a problem.

Rats, but thanks. My bambineos were soo lovely and now they're like cardboard, very disappointed. Maybe I'll sort those before buying anything else and wrecking it!

Flame · 04/06/2007 22:56

How much powder are you using? Too much can make em crunchy - vinegar helps a bit, as does rubbing them lots after drying.

They never stay that absolutely gorgeous softness though.

I just washed em 3 times with no powder just to make sure, but no difference. Always use vinegar. Haven't tried rubbing them, I'll try that, thanks! I left them out in the rain for 2 days and that helped a lot, but bit short of nappies! I just find the bambineos awful at the moment, I feel like I'm wrapping him up in sandpaper. Do you think sticking them in a dryer might help, there's a laundrette nearby I could visit.

Flame · 04/06/2007 23:05

Yes, thre dryer helps oodles - I take mine to my friend's every so often

Ok, will do that after the next wash, I'm desperate! Was offered a dryer as a pressie when ds2 born, but refused on eco grounds. Tempted to change my mind. Again, you're a star

The lady at TotsBots told me not to tumble dry as it would damage my nappies (getting them free from council )

I can't see how I can make it work if I don't tumble dry them. Washing and drying for 6???

NormaStanleyFletcher · 04/06/2007 23:13

Oh feck - I want some.

Do you take paypal? (I have funds there after some clothes sales)

Flame · 05/06/2007 07:46

Yup, paypal, cheque, credit card

The lady from Tots Bots was right.. but also misleading. It WILL damage them (mainly the elastic, and if it is bamboo it needs to be a LOW heat), but with the elastic damage its a case of they will only last through 1-2 children rather than 3-4. Also many WAHMs will resew the elastic for you, or you just use nappy nippas and you can pull them tight with that.

Ceolas · 05/06/2007 08:15

Ah so if they're only to last one child (2 at the most) it will prob be OK?

I think it would be a non-starter if there were to be no tumbling! I will line dry when it's a good day, but not so frequent in this neck of the woods

Flame · 05/06/2007 08:22

Nah, loads of people just always tumble and they get on fine

amazonianwoman · 05/06/2007 08:36

AQ - stick your bambineos in the post and I'll wash them for you in our lovely soft Manchester water, mine are still super soft (only a few weeks old though)

Serious! It's worth a try

littlekiwibaby · 05/06/2007 10:43

If the nappies you buy are fitted with silicone elastic ( lastin) or the rubbery stuff in a little lambs, then tumbling wont affect the elastication at all.
With terry ( bamboo or cotton) it is recommended to shake the nappies when they come out of the washer before putting them in the tumbler ( or on the line) to fluff up the fibre loops where they have been compressed ( LL website).
And don't overfill the washing machine. Our water is a nightmare and we found that putting a bit less in kept the crunch factor down.
The aplix is a bit stiff, we are working on sourcing a softer, more flexible one, but that is going into fabric backed which is more likely to peel away and ruin.

Flame- big wave

You are very kind, AW
I rubbed 2 of my bambineos this morning and they've come up quite a bit softer, but def going to try tumbling them now and again too.

CarGirl · 05/06/2007 11:46

just wanted to add I tumble my nappies for a short while on cool & low setting (A rated according to the instruction manual) then leave them to dry manually. It has the diesired effect of keeping them soft without wearing them out more quickly which happens if you tumble them to actually dry them.

V hard thames valley water here.

accessorizewithbabysick · 05/06/2007 14:06

I'll try that, thanks Cargirl, easier to tumble them first I think! Wish I had guts to ask next door neighbours if I could borrow theirs rather than hike to the laundrette!
