The perils of free childcare

I have a 3yo and 1.5yo who are both in nursery, which is currently closed for the summer break. As I’m expecting again I wanted to save my annual leave, so asked MiL if she’d be interested in looking after the kids while I work (she always moans that we never ask).

I work from home 2 days a week and was working from home today. MiL took the kids to the park in the morning then for something to eat at 11ish. Having run around and then filled her tummy the little one fell asleep in the buggy and then was awake again at 12.30 when both kids would normally have their nap.

MiL then announced that, as I was at home, she was going to have a lie down and went and slept for an hour and a half while I had to look after the little one. The 3yo then refused to sleep too as her sister was awake so I ended up looking after both of them when I should have been working.

AIBU to be more than annoyed? She’s due to look after them for the rest of the week. I’d much rather get the babysitter to come instead but it’ll just cause a huge drama for which I’ll get the blame.

Do you work from home all week? If so I would definitely get a babysitter, maybe suggest baby sitter for the afternoon as childcare clearly knackered it your mil so she can have them in the morning if she likes and drop them off to the childminder in the afternoon.

Can you drop them at hers with a pram and some toys....

Agree with fuzzywuzzy. Or can you work from a coffee shop so you're not home?

Good idea! But she lives 2 hours away so is staying for the week, unless I send her home early...

The babysitter looks after the kids here and I’m not sure it would work if they were both in the house at the same times do the babysitter came to take over.

Coffee shop isn’t an option unfortunately - I have a desktop that I need to use to access the office network.
