Options for a 12yo who loves swimming and has her period on holiday?

Is there anything she can do? She won't consider tampons.

These if you can afford them

Wombat44 · 12/08/2018 18:32

If the holiday/period hasn't started yet, you could ask the GP for a prescription for norehisterone to delay her period. My dd used that aged 13 and it worked well.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 12/08/2018 18:40

Yes, if you’ve time go to GP, my Dd had it for a trip and was great, just took it until return (so it’s a delay system) and useful for a one off.

No time for GP. Any medication I can get from a pharmacist to delay or stop period mid flow? Those swim suits look good but very expensive plus no time for delivery.

Are you already on holiday? She may just have to wait a couple of days if she isn’t comfortable with tampons.

dementedpixie · 12/08/2018 19:22

My dd just used tampons tbh. Lillets do a teen version or Tampax do a lites one that is very thin or dd just used my lillets applicator ones

Can she not just stay out of the pool for a few days until it's finished

dementedpixie · 12/08/2018 19:29

Is ibuprofen supposed to reduce flow?

LoughingLikeAShark · 12/08/2018 19:32

I suggest trying Tampax Compak - loads easier to insert for a teen unused to tampons.

Other than that, black bikini bottoms and regular swimming!

KennDodd · 12/08/2018 20:06

Actually, just had a thought, her swimming costume is black, maybe she could just swim in the sea, not the pool?

Transaxnamic avid (or however its spelt!) lightens a heavy period. You can buy OTC from boots. I don't know if you can use it for light periods to make them lighter but I'm sure you can investigate.

If not a pair of the little black jersey shirts over bikini and sea swimming is a fine option. Just rinse her stuff out afterwards in cold water.

Redgreencoverplant · 12/08/2018 21:00

Yes black costume and the sea is the way to go :)

Tallula386 · 12/08/2018 21:04

Tranexamic acid reduces flow (I have it prescribed for heavy periods). You can buy it over the counter in Boots and some other pharmacies.

Not sure if an age minimum though.

Pinotwoman82 · 12/08/2018 21:13

When do you leave? I did a boots online survey and had it approved and I collected it from a local boots in 2 working days. Have a look online all the information is there.

NC4Now · 12/08/2018 23:51

TBH if she isn’t really heavy, she’ll probably be ok with a black cossie. TMI but I tend to have a couple of heavy days to start and after that just be finishing off, and I think it would probably be ok to swim on those days.

Mooncup🌚

Thank you for the replies.

Had another (really silly) thought. If she's swimming in the sea with her period, what about sharks? I've heard they can smell blood from miles away!

I wouldn’t recommend sending her swimming in shark infested waters, period or not!
