Need a miracle cure for nappy rash

I've had a look at all the previous threads on this but I seem to have tried everything already. Dd has had nappy rash since we went on holiday and had to use disposables instead of cotton nappies over 3 weeks ago and although it doesn't seem to bother her it's just not going away. It did have very sore red bits but they seem to have gone a bit, leaving general redness all over (front and back). I've tried Metanium, Sudocrem, Kamillosan, Vaseline and just about everything else I can think of. We mostly use home made camomile wipes (if not then sensitive Pampers ones)and very rarely use disposables-I'm sure this is what started it off. Although these things have helped it a bit they just aren't doing the job. I showed it to the health visitor who said it looked like exzema and suggested aqueous cream, which I tried along with Oilatum Junior but still no luck!!
I also leave her nappy off as much as possible and don't use any soaps or anything in her bath

It isn't bothering her, her wee doesn't smell any different and she's quite happy-although teething- but I'm desperate to get rid of it.

Any ideas or suggestions would be MUCH appreciated

glad its got better
i forgot to say that calendula cream is great as well i use weleda calendulon ointment for loads of things its fantastic- couldn't survive without it
kamillosan cream is very soothing too.
kamillosan barrier cream(bit like sudocrem with added chamomile) is good for keeping nr at bay!

Glad it has got better - hope that it doesn't re-occur. Just wanted to add that I have always found that my dd's nappy rash improved when I went from my normal cotton nappies to the disposables because it keeps her 'dryer' IYSWIM.

I second the calendula cream. We use it for all sorts of scrapes (in addtition to a recent bout of rash)and just love it.

My little girl had bad nappy rash recently and I took her to see our GP (who is excellent). He prescribed some fucidin cream, canestan cream and vaseline. I was instructed to put a thin layer of each on her bottom in that order on her bottom three times daily (at least). She has redness all over and it cleared it up within days. My GP said its always useful to have a tube of each of the above in the medicine cabinet. HTH

Roche have just produced a new nappy rash cream called Bepanthan which you can buy over the counter at good pharmacies. I think it is excellent and has worked for my toddler. If you have a friend in Canada, they produce an awesome one there called "Aisles Paste" (not sure of the spelling) which is the best thing - it is basically a much stronger version of Sudocream although I think it contains titanium dioxide instead if Zinc - see if you can get some in the post perhaps?

Old fashioned I know, but it does work!

If you use the old terry nappies, in the final rinse put 2 tablespoons of vinegar. I am being serious, it makes the alkalinity of the urine neutral, hence less irritation.

However, If there is any kind of infection you need an anticeptic cream as mentioned or if it has little white heads, could be thrush, so a fungicide.

dazedandconfused · 26/08/2004 21:16

Calendula cream is fantastic stuff - it seems to work like magic for DS's bum!

Bladee · 26/08/2004 22:40

Gt Ormand Street use Metanium - was great on my kids too! Beware - stains anything it touches!!!!

ChicPea · 26/08/2004 23:07

Bladee, Biotex neat spray gets it out with leaving it for 5 mins and then rubbing with cold water,Biotex again and fairy washing up liquid.

Bladee · 26/08/2004 23:09

Cheers Chickpea..... have had to scrub DD's Harrods shirt (hand-me-down) tonight til the knuckles were raw....wish I'd known that earlier..... Ta!

carla · 26/08/2004 23:17

Metanium, Metanium, Metanium. 'Tis the only thing that works]

ChicPea · 26/08/2004 23:48

Bladee Sweetie, you should be wearing washing up gloves ... every time.

In general I have found nappy rash improves within 48 hours by taking the following steps:

  • stop using commercial wipes and use plain water only
  • ensure baby's bottom dried carefully
  • apply a thin layer of metanium

If no improvement after a couple of days then it is most likely thrush. This usually appears as a 'brick red' lesion with satellite lesions. In this case swap the metanium for Caneston 1% cream. You will need to use this for about a week even if the infection appears to have gone. If you stop too early then it tends to return.

As far as the issue of cloth v disposable nappies goes, there is little evidence to support the notion that nappy rash is reduced with disposables despite what the advertisers say.

Good luck

I am Mum to 4 kids. My youngest who is now 2 left the maternity hospital with Nappy Rash. I was very upset about this.
Did detective work and found the wet wipes they used were not HYPO ALLERGENIC
they must be. When I discovered this the whole problem resolved.
