How did you get rid of your baby stuff?

Hi. Our DD is nearly 3 now and we held on to all her baby stuff hoping for number 2 who never arrived. Am mid 40s now so moving on from hoping for number 2. We've never got rid of anything! So we have pram/carrycot, infant car seat, high chair, baby bath and every item of clothing she's ever had including nice coats and special dresses to a billion white vests in different sizes! Also baby toys and simple puzzles she's moved on from.

I was the last of all my friends/family to have children so no one close to give away to. Not bothered about selling in terms of earning cash but would love if some items could be recycled rather than dump stuff at the tip. Problem is me and DH both work full time and commute and just don't have a lot of time to post items to buyers etc or have people round if we advertised locally. So wondering if anyone is aware of any organisations who might take these and distribute? We live in London.

For those whose families are complete, how did you get rid of your baby stuff?

Thanks!

I sold some of the big items, and donated a lot to baby/child bank charities. I felt that way our loved stuff would go to another family directly.

Have a look at Stripey Stork, they have a list of UK baby banks.

And for interest value, they based themselves on a phenomenal Melbourne, Australia baby bank which was started by 2 mums out of their garage. They now cover the entire state of Victoria and are amazing at what they do 😊

I tried some of these second hand markets but they were rubbish, people wanted stuff for a pittance.

So I use eBay for branded items, eBay for bundles of high street stuff like Next clothes, Facebook buying and selling page for bundles of baby clothes, baby gyms etc.

You'll never make a fortune but it feels good to get rid and it's nice to know they're being used again as there was so much life left in everything!

I gave everything to a local charity that supports teenage single mums get set up for the arrival of their babies.
Years ago I was in that position so more than happy to give to them.
They were really grateful and pleased to receive all of Dd's stuff. Everything was in brand new condition.

Women's Aid is another charity that could probably make good use of your baby things. If you have quite a lot to donate, some charities will come and collect it from you.
I gave most of my newborn stuff to a friend who was a midwife, they quietly pass it onto new Mums who need it.

There is a small local organisation where someone collects baby and kids clothes and items and passes them onto other people who are desperately in need of them. She passes them on through children's centres etc who know about these families. So would see if there is something similar near you or ask at a local children's centre if they know of anything. Sure it would help lots of families. What a lovely thing to do with it all.

We either sold all ours or donated to charity

Free cycle ... if you don't need the extra pennies please think of others who can't afford the basics.

My local charity shops always struggle for baby things for some reason so I split everything into 4 and delivered it to the 4 local charity shops one Saturday morning.

I popped in a few weeks later and they delighted in telling me that most of it sold as soon as it hit the shelves and was so greatly received.

Another vote for a baby bank, my sister volunteers with one and they do great referral parcels for parents in need (fleeing domestic violence or refugees). They then often donate it back for other parents to make use of.

I passed some to friends, did a car boot and charity shopped the rest unless it was awful.

You could ask your health visitor, or at your child's nursery

Fara Kids is a great charity with shops around London. They would love your stuff I'm sure.

helvetica01 · 16/08/2018 12:31

If you're in north London I'd buy your stuff! :)

butlerswharf · 16/08/2018 12:50

I just gave them to a charity in London that helps homeless mothers currently in temporary accommodation. There are a few baby banks in London too.
