This oogling of mothercare cabinets and agonising over winnie the pooh vs whatever is utterly, utterly lost on me.

surely the money could be better spent on a holiday or a nice pair of shoes or something?

newborns don't care and odds are they'll end up with you anyway for a bit.

Why not save the money and paint when they are toddlers and give a crap?

i thank you

Your not alone. I took great delight while expecting boy in teasing my in laws with - well the baby room has blue walls ( just like it always did) "oh, its a boy" says MiL " and a pink carpet " (ditto) " "oh a girl" says FiL .
ACtully its just the carpet we bought the house with and we painted the walls deep blue when it was the office as I didn't want a floral office.
I'm very proud of my dim out curtain linings, made from dark fabric I found at the scrap store and sewed seome curtain tape to.
Boy is 14 months and the babies room is still rather sparce, with chest of drawers, cot, chair from dining room and a plastic crate with a few toys in. Its not a big room, I imagaine when hes a bit bigger it'll gain a tractor poster.

Oh I forgot our 'themed ceiling', tis a few of those bird, beetle, fish etc pull out posters that the Mail on Sunday were giving out last year. great to get their attention whilst trying to change a wriggly baby. The posters sadly do clash with the primark pyjamas theme though..... And the height chart theme behind the door....

sorry guys! I did spend a bloody fortune on dd's 'nursery' BUT didn't paint/decorate before she was born! In fact, dh had to go to one of our shops to pick up the correct coloured car seat and moses basket on the day she was born, then a few days later i went and picked up everything else i needed.

Then only reason i did dd's room, is that i am addicted to pink- even my car! So the opportunity to 'pink' one of the bedrooms was far too tempting!

Once we'd decorated, bought furniture and the other bits and bobs (carpet, black out blinds etc!) It cost about £1500, but it will grow with her for quite a while.

We did buy a new mattress because we used hand-me-down cots. I feel strangely frugal now.

For me it's the fact that you'll have to keep on redecorating as they grow and you feel they should haver something more appropriate to their age.
Our dss room is consequently cream with cream blinds and a navy carpet. If you took out the toys, books, bedding and cot you'd never know it was a kids room.
They can have their own walls etc. when they're old enough to care / ask for it.

Nursery? nursery? what are you on about? - we lived in a one bed flat and our furniture was second hand never mind dd's!

hjscho · 04/06/2007 14:55

Didn't spend a penny. Cot was given to us and we already had a wardrobe. We have no acquired a bed and DH's old cupboards from when he was a child. To me its another room...I have a problem with calling it a nursery for a while and then it becoming a 'bedroom' again.

MamaD · 04/06/2007 16:28

Didn't do a nursery as I knew I was only spending the first 6 mths of dd's life in that house.

When we moved to the house we are in now all I did was buy the 'bang on the door' animal A-Z stickarounds to 'baby' the room (box room) a bit, and to brighten it up. I did buy a changing table but the changing bit/baby bath lifts off when no longer needed and underneath is just a box standard chest of drawers. I think it was about 30 Euros in ToysRus in Germany.

I had a friend that bought EVERYTHING (and I really do mean everything) that Toys R Us did for babies in a pink theme (can't remember what it was called). She was really p*d off with me when I pointed out that it was such a pale pink the baby probably wouldn't be able to see it in any case. Up till then she had been really proud of herself for only spending about a £1000 on the new baby............

I obviously neglected my dd - I didn't even buy her a 1st birthday present........

We bought a cot bed that got next to no use but everything else was just furniture that was already in the room or in the house. We ended up co-sleeping most of the time and she went into a single bed sometime between the age of 18 months and 2 years but still sleeps in our bed about half the time. The bed she is in now is a hand me down, my sister's old bed and is super comfy.

The thing I had wish i had bought was a changing table as i got really bad back ache from all that leaning down to change on beds.

Didn't spend anything at all as daughter spent her first year in the same room as me. Had a passed down cot and Moses basket and got given lots of toys, a mobile etc.

Have spent quite a lot on her proper bedroom though... nice bed and bedding, a beautiful lamp, a bookshelf and clothes rail. Though most of her furniture I already had.
