9 month old swallowed water in the tub

Hello, I was bathing my 9 month old boy tonight and he's slipped out my grip as I was washing his bottom and back and swallowed some water. He started panicking and trying to catch his breath which was not nice to see at all. He seems fine now but I just wondered if that's ok or should I worry at all. Thank you for any comments or advice

I wouldn't worry at all - has happened to both of mine a few times.

ShowOfHands · 07/08/2018 21:07

Has happened to every child I know Smile

Am I missing something as I don't see the problem. It's just water and a bit of soap maybe? Not being goady, genuinely wondering if it is something I should be careful about as i wouldn't even register this as a problem at all

Really?

I know some folk are anxious parents but this being a problem? Calm down. Don't worry. Carry on with your night.

Over the next 12 months or so, he'll start toddling, and will pick up and eat all sorts of disgusting things Grin. You'll look back and laugh at being worried about him swallowing water.

danni0509 · 07/08/2018 21:38

Wait till he's a toddler and drinks jugs of bath water Grin

He'll be absolutely fine.

sar302 · 07/08/2018 21:45

My 8 month old sucks the bath water out of his flannel 😬

leighdinglady · 07/08/2018 21:50

Another flannel sucking 8 month old here!

NoNoCharlieRascal · 07/08/2018 21:51

Is it the drinking of the water or are you worrying about water on the lungs?

APermanentlyExhaustedPigeon · 07/08/2018 21:52

Swallowed as in drank? He probably had a fright but will be fine. If you’re worried that he inhaled some of the water into his lungs, I imagining that would be a lot more obvious with coughing, etc.
Try not to worry Flowers

ILoveDolly · 07/08/2018 21:54

My 6 year old drinks it in huge mouthfuls. Kids need a few germs in them, I'm sure he will be fine. It's nice of you to be concerned, you're a nice mum not all heartless like me Grin

ginandnappies · 07/08/2018 21:56

My one year old drank bath water out of a toy cup the other night. He's fine :)

ALemonyPea · 07/08/2018 21:58

He will be fine. He’s done well to last until 9 months to do this.

Astrid2 · 07/08/2018 22:01

My 4 month old has licked the dripping bath water from her hair wash since she was 2 weeks old lol

bluerunningshoes · 07/08/2018 22:02

congrats, that's one more thing to tick off your oops list

have you had stuff 'posted' into the dvd player drawer?
fallen off sofa/bed?
fingers stepped on?

bluerunningshoes · 07/08/2018 22:02

licking a dust bunny?

emoji · 07/08/2018 22:06

@sar302 another flannel sucker here! DD 7 months - her favourite bath time activity

Lana1234 · 07/08/2018 22:55

My 11mo always drinks the water off his toy boats. Your baby will be fine!

HugeGlassofMalbec · 07/08/2018 23:01

Ive got a 1 year old and a 2 year old who drink bath water. Have been since they could hold a flannel to suck and now drink it out of pots/toys.

theconstantinoplegardener · 07/08/2018 23:15

Assuming it wasn't loads of water, he'll be fine. There is however something called water intoxicication which occasionally affects babies, typically those who are dunked under water during swimming lessons or if their formula is made up with too much water, but it tends to be younger babies who are most at risk, and even then it's fairly rare. Unless he gulped down a lot of water, he should be OK.

The symptoms of water intoxication include low temperature, twitching and seizures, so if he were to show any of these then you would need to get him to A&E, but it really is unlikely to be this.

gluteustothemaximus · 07/08/2018 23:25

Majority of cases are fine but rarely you can have dry drowning or secondary drowning if water was inhaled and it's in the lungs. Worth a google to look out for symptoms if you're worried.
