How much does your 9 month old drink?

My son is a good eater and has three balanced meals a day plus a snack , I'm concerned that he's not drinking enough though.

He's started to drink less formula this week and drinks about 10oz of formula per day and has sips of water with his meals too.

He seems happy, full of energy and in good health.

Can I please ask for your experiences of similar aged babies?

Heeeey!
My 9 month old was like this! So I spoke to health visitor and she said as long as they're having wet and dirty nappies then they're ok! My daughter is drinking about 10oz of milk a day also! But she doesn't really seem to wanna eat much......I'm putting it down to the hot weather! Hope this helps hun x

katzeons · 07/08/2018 15:34

She's just turnt 9 months, she used to eat so much more but I don't know if it's the weather or if it's just because she's started crawling that she doesn't wanna sit still!

Thanks , it's good to know that he's not the only baby that doesn't drink much formula.

10oz of formula seems very low to me at 9months- my baby at that time was on double. If they are seemingly well then Im sure its fine, I would though expect in this heat babies to drink more, not necessarily formula. Do you offer he/she water throughout the day?

NetVolume · 07/08/2018 15:46

Yes , it seems low to me too. I offer him water but he's not massively interested in it , he loves yoghurt and fruit though.

Op has said he has sips of water with meals!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/08/2018 16:15

Yes i read that, just in the heat I'm wondering if perhaps she should offer water throughout the day not just at meal times.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/08/2018 16:16

great OP, Id just keep offering and he will take when he takes.

katzeons · 07/08/2018 16:51

As long as they're happy and have wet and dirty nappies I'm sure they are ok! Have you tried maybe some baby juice? might not be a fan of water?

Bobbiepin · 07/08/2018 16:53

My 9mo has 2 6oz bottles, one first thing and the other at bedtime. No milk during the day but she drinks water with and between meals. If they are getting plenty of food its no problem.

NetVolume · 07/08/2018 17:08

Thank you all for posting. Nappies are as normal so perhaps he is just happy taking less than before.

I was thinking about trying juice but isn't that terribly bad for their teeth?

Don’t start on juice OP, it’s not a good idea to let them get a taste for it. Continue as you are, offering water, plenty of yogurts etc

katzeons · 07/08/2018 17:57

No if you use heniz baby juice should be ok and maybe just let him have 5oz or something a day? Nothing wrong with giving your kid a little bit of juice and I think if you check it out is flavoured spring water but it's up to you! My daughter is ok with it and maybe it might help your son get a bit of liquid in him Smile

rubyroot · 07/08/2018 19:21

Personally, I'm not keen on the idea of juice either.

I've found my baby will take quite a bit of water if it is tepid and e drinks well from a nuk trainer cup

Mindchilder · 07/08/2018 19:25

They still need a minimum of about 18oz of formula a day until 12 months or you need to start supplementing with vitamins.

NotSoThinLizzy · 07/08/2018 19:32

My 11 month old barely drinks a thing has boob at 5 then loads of milk in his breakfast then a sip of water at lunch and dinner then boob at night

NetVolume · 07/08/2018 20:22

Thanks all. He's managed 15oz today so I'm slightly less worried. It took persistence to get him to take that amount though.

I think I'll hold off on juice as I get the feeling he'll dislike water even more if I start serving it.

Bobbiepin · 07/08/2018 20:30

There's no need for juice. Just because it's in baby packaging doesn't mean it's good and you'd have to be very naive to believe it is. You're right about him disliking water more after having juice. Once they get a taste for the sweet stuff it's tough to get them to have water.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/08/2018 21:57

Also perhaps try different temperatures- I have a baby that loathes warm drinks, milk, formula, water all has to be fridge cold.

Caterina99 · 08/08/2018 01:00

My nearly 10 month old has 3 bottles a day. Usually between 6 and 8oz. Then a cup of water with meals. I think that’s around the recommended amount of formula and I don’t really monitor her water intake but she definitely drinks it and I have no concerns.

I wouldn’t worry if there’s no signs of dehydration or constipation though. You can add milk to meals like porridge and mashed potato and give watery food like soup and fruit and vegetables. Particularly watermelon and things like pears and peaches. Some babies just don’t drink much milk and prefer food.

I wouldn’t give juice unless you’re desperate, as like you said then they won’t want water anymore!

NetVolume · 08/08/2018 08:14

We actually do now serve fridge-cold formula , he stopped wanting it at room temperature when the heatwave began. So actually, he's probably been gradually going off of formula for a while.

He does have a good glug of formula in his breakfast so I guess I must count that too.

To those of you that say their baby has 8oz bottles - my son only ever went up to 6oz bottles then quickly had less as he started solids. He's always needed little and often as he suffered with reflux , food immediately sat better with him than milk.
