Bruise/rash on baby's leg

Hi

My baby boy is 11 weeks old and today I've noticed these marks on his leg/foot like tiny bruises or a rash maybe. I've phoned doctors and going it at 4 but wondered if anyone had any idea what they could be?

I cant think of how he would have bruised himself so no idea where it's from

Does it pass the glass test?

Emma145 · 07/08/2018 13:26

No can still see it through the glass which I said on the phone to doctors and they said to take him in at 4. Other than a stuffy nose he seems happy.

I wouldn't wait until 4, I would go straight to A&E.

  1. Now, honestly.

DS1 had a rash like that as a baby and I had to get him to A&E. I’m glad I did.

Call them and tell them it’s a purple pinprick rash not going away under a glass.

Don’t panic, I know my post is vague but honestly for a symptom like that in a baby so young it’s absolutely vital that you get him seen now.

BertieBotts · 07/08/2018 13:29

Hmm yes at 11 weeks old I wouldn't wait another 3 hours. Paediatric A&E is not going to be busy on a Tuesday afternoon and your baby is very little, they can go downhill very quickly.

It's probably nothing but with such a small baby you want to KNOW that ASAP.

Ceecee18 · 07/08/2018 13:30

I agree with pp, straight to a&e if it is doesn't pass the glass test. They will not think you are wasting time and odds are it's nothing serious (DD had similar at this age and all was fine) but it's not worth risking it. If you go to a&e, tell them it is not blanching and you will most likely be seen very quickly. Babies can take a bad turn very quickly, you need to go to a&e, just in case.

Absolutely,

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 07/08/2018 13:33

It could be a mild viral rash or a low platelet count. But definitely straight to A&E. Flowers

Thanks all taking him to a and e now

Hope all is well OP, but please don’t worry, even if it’s all good news they will never think you a time waster for taking a tiny baby with a failed glass test rash.

Hawkmoth · 07/08/2018 13:36

Good luck OP.

Wonkydonkey44 · 07/08/2018 13:36

SleepWarrior · 07/08/2018 13:38

So glad you're on your way, you can never be too careful with a rash like that in a tiny baby.

Hopefully it will turn out to be a reassuring waste of your time Flowers

SendYouUpInFlames · 07/08/2018 13:58

A&E ASAP

SendYouUpInFlames · 07/08/2018 13:59

My 4 yr old son gets rashes like this after a virus, it's exactly like the meningitis type rash that doesn't fade, he's had it quite a few times now,

Op pleased it's nothing sinister.

YeTalkShiteHen · 08/08/2018 18:49

Oh I’m so glad to read it’s all ok! It was sepsis DS1 had (I can tell you that now without scaring the shite out of you!) and his rash looked very similar, which is why I panicked.

MummyTummy2323 · 01/08/2025 11:36

We had the same type of rash appear on our little one's leg (purple pin prick, non-blanching). 6 hours in hospital and it turns out it was caused by restriction from the baby carrier. The doctor said it's more common than you'd think. He reassured us we did the right thing by getting the little one checked and just to be extra sure that he's in the carrier not too tight. Always best to get these things checked since little ones can deteriorate rapidly with meningitis etc
