HI,
I had my baby this morning at 6.02 at home and am now a bit worried. She's brought up mucus/colostrum about 3 times and appears to be choking when she's doing so. Am i being over protective. She's also hiccupping lots and I think I'm going to have to watch over her all night?

my ds did exactly the same thing, I think all babies have mucus to clear after the birth. He also sounded as though he was choking but it only lasted for a day or so.

QueenofBleach · 01/06/2007 20:33

Not an expert by any means but maybe just trying to clear lungs, my dd did this a lot for the first couple of days, thought it would never end. If worried contact midwife, or phone the maternity ward where you had her.

they can be a bit mucousy, ds1 was like that cos he was c section so his lungs didn't get squished enough on the way out, or something. it's scary to see when they look like they are choking but I think it's pretty normal

colditz · 01/06/2007 20:33

It is normal, she won't choke sweetheart. I know it's very scary. You don't have to sit up all night, am presuming you are in the same room? you will definately hear her.

Snaf · 01/06/2007 20:33

And congratulations, btw

lulumama · 01/06/2007 20:34

i would sit up all night anyway, due to being on a high after birth ! it is ok, she might just be mucousy after the birth..was it a quick birth? congratulations too !

rosealbie · 01/06/2007 20:34

congratulations from me too

BettySpaghetti · 01/06/2007 20:36

congratulations on your new baby

My DS was like this too, really mucousy (is that a word ?) -I remember it well. Hopefully it should improve soon.

Mercy · 01/06/2007 20:37

my dd did this from day one. Is it def moucus?

Is she feeding well and regularly?

Oh and congratulations too!!!!!!!!!!

dm1 · 01/06/2007 21:24

Brilliant - thanks all for your reassurance and congratulations.
She had a little feed about 9 this morn and then another at about 2. I've just woken her to feed her but she doesn't seem interested and has gone off to sleep again. I changed her nappy to wake her up and she played with the nipple but now is asleep I can't make her feed although I'm obviously encouraaging her. Hope this is normal on a first day too.

Don't worry it is totally normal for some babies to do this for the first few days - well for my LO anyway. Congrats and good luck with it all - such an amazing, precious time.

lulumama · 01/06/2007 21:27

keep perservering, and lots of skin to skin

LaBoheme · 01/06/2007 21:29

Sorry I meant the mucous bring-up was norm, the feeding I'm not sure about - although my LO didn't feed much either during the first 3 days.

GlassSlipper · 01/06/2007 21:30

Congratulations!

My DD took about a week and a half to clear up all of the gunk in her lungs. Midwives werent worried. I got through a lot of baby clothes and muslins. It was a shock as DD1 was never sick. It should clear by itself. Dont worry.

feetheart · 01/06/2007 21:31

Congratulations!

DD was born in the morning and seemed to sleep all the first day - made up for it that night though!
DS was born in the evening (at home) and slept most of the night, though I was like a cat on a hot tin roof as he made choking noises all night long!!!

Once the choking noises stop she will find something else to worry you, welcome to the world of parenthood
