I am thinking if moving my 20 month old daughter into a bed. Would you recommend going straight to a normal bed with a rail guard or a toddler bed?

We moved DS straight into a normal bed with a guard. We have a cotbed but needed it for DD's arrival. We bought one of the single beds with a guestbed underneath (Argos does them) and it's been brilliant when we've had cousins to stay.

Normal with gueard.

I bought my son a toddler bed and he hated it, i know have singlw with guard and cant get rid of the toddler bed!

We got this one this one and have put bed rail thingys on too so DD feels secure.

we got a Flexa bed, which has sides on it. when dd1 got to age 2 we bought legs for it, turned into a mid-height bed and put cute pink curtains around the bottom to make a playhouse. she loves it!

Just out of interest, as DS is 20 mths and we too are thinking of moving him, what is the diff between a 'normal bed; and a 'toddler bed'?

ZacheryQuack · 01/06/2007 22:21

Toddler beds are shorter and lower.

My dd went straight from the cot to a full-sized single bed at age 2 and hasn't looked back! It's a fairly low bed with a head and a foot plus we have put a side rail on it so that she feels secure. She loves all the space! I reckoned that it made sense to do this rather than having to settle her into a toddler bed and then ultimately re-settle her into a bigger bed. Plus I decided that I would rather spend more cash on a really nice single bed instead of having to pay out twice.

I would really just go for normal bed plus guard rail. IMO the toddler bed is a bit of a waste of money. Does she need to go into a bed just yet? Unless you need the cot for another baby or she is in danger of being able to climb out of it I'd suggest leaving her in it for another few months.

MonkeyandBabyBoo · 08/06/2007 11:21

We moved DS into a normal single bed at 20 months, with no guard - just put another duvet on the floor in case he did fall out, he only fell out twice and we haven't looked back.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 08/06/2007 11:27

Wouldn't bother with a toddler bed, waste of time and money. DD went straight to normal bed. No rail, nothing and she never got out it to come and annoy us. She was 3 though.

Shall be doing the same with DS or waiting perhaps even longer as he thrashes around in it so much. We pay so much for cots in the first place then feel obliged to move them to a bed asap. Why? It's not doing them any harm unless they are too big for it

We did think about toddler bed but due to cost we got a normal single bed without rails for our 2.5 yr old , only fell out once but had cot matress next to bed so not a problem. Also for a while after we put a folded towel just under mattress to make it tilt a bit. Has been in 3 months now and loves it, mattress and towel gone.

MrsTittleMouse · 12/06/2007 08:33

A friend of ours did a normal bed, but put their DS on the mattress only at first, so that he wouldn't have far to fall when he rolled off as he was getting used to the lack of cot sides.

TheBlonde · 12/06/2007 08:39

Normal bed.
