Best materials to sew nappies?

I found a free pattern for sewing a nappy with a pocket. The designer used t-shirt cotton only, but I was wondering if it's better for the inner fabric to be fleece instead? What about the insert for the pocket, should that be cotton for absorbency or should it be fleece too?
Thanks for any advice offered :-)

The pocket nappies I've used have had a fleece lining (quite important I'd say, for wicking away liquids and removal of poo) and the inner stuffers were bamboo or microfibre. I'm not sure fleece would be as absorbent?

Thanks for replying! I'll use fleece for the inner layer then. I could make a sort of quilted cotton pad for the pocket maybe, or I could knit double layer in thick dishcloth cotton I think... Might make a practice nappy + pad and dump liquid on it and see what happens!

Don't just use t-shirt fabric, I bought one like that and the wee soaks round from the liner to the outer and then onto clothes. Probably okay to use just for the outer though. I agree that fleece is pretty standard for the inner, and you could use for both of you wanted.

Also you'll need a waterproof layer somewhere either the outer or an extra middle layer. Some people use fleece wraps but I'm not convinced of waterproofness of that, not that I've tried them.

Any chance you could post the pattern link if it's online?

Here's the pattern: mammacandoit.com/products/fitted-diaper-pattern

and I bought the waterproof cover pattern to go with it: mammacandoit.com/collections/non-free-patterns/products/cloth-diaper-cover-pattern-one-size-fits-all

Cover is a separate piece from the nappy so you can wipe and reuse the cover. :-) Designer just used old t shirts for the main nappy, which is a nice recycling idea and all, but from what I read here, fleece prevents skin irritation whereas cotton keeps the moisture pressed against the baby's skin?

Silly question btw, but just to be sure, is it the same fleece as used for simple fleece blankets?

Sorry, I misunderstood. T-shirt fabric will be fine with that design if you're using a liner as it's that which keeps baby dry. If you use fleece then a liner isn't needed.

Cheap blanket type fleece is fine. There are plenty of people on here using chopped up blankets for liners.
