Potty training age

Hi.
So much DD is 3 in October. She is quite switched on and very chatty. I am keen to get her potty trained and we bought a potty and knickers but she just doesn't get it. For instance in the garden running around with no nappy on but with a potty near by she just wee'd but didn't even acknowledge she had done it. I told her that was a wee bit she didn't really get it. She then squatted over and I quickly asked if she needed a pop she said yes ( she tells me this when in nappys) sat in potty for a while then got off no pop. She continues playing then poos in garden. Non of this is an issue I guess as she's obviously not ready but just wanted to no if this is common as she is 3 in October? I am due a baby I'm a couple of weeks but looks like it's double nappies for a while. I don't want to pressure her as I no that can back fire. Any thoughts? Thanks xx

How long have you been doing this? DD2 is 2.8 and just potty trained a couple of weeks ago. We had a few days of letting her run around the garden naked with a potty nearby where she didn’t wee in it. It was only once she’d managed one or two wees in there that it seemed to click. On a positive note, we only had about 3 accidents the first couple of days after that, and then she’d got the hang of it!

We tried the "Oh crap" method. I didn't think it would work but has been amazing! You do this naked at first, and then introduce clothing, honestly try googling it or looking at the cheat sheet! My DS started 3 weeks ago at 2 years 3 months. Was fully dry with no accidents by 3rd day!

Things that worked for me:

  • I sat my DDs in the potty with a book or with the TV on for 20 minutes or so at a time. Id they wee'd/poo'd they'd get lots and lots of praise.
  • Any accidents were a case of 'never mind, maybe next time' don't make a big deal.
  • No pull-ups or nappies (except at night) Once we decided to potty train we stuck to knickers only. A lot of accidents but we used pull-ups with DD1 and she took a lot longer as it confused her.
  • Portable toilet seat for when you're out and about (but prepare for accidents too, lots of spare knickers and pants)

I second a read of the ‘Oh Crap’ book, it really helped us.
As for age... well it depends on the child. DD1 was trained at 2.4 and DD2 at 20 months (she was by far the easier one to potty train too!). Completely child dependent.

Learning to use the potty is just like learning to walk or anything. They don’t just wake up one day and are able to do it they have learn to do it.

I second the Oh crap book.

Just read that you have a baby due soon. I would not potty train now.

Ok. Thanks I'll try the crap book. I no she needs to learn but I just don't want to put her in knickers that she keeps on having accidents in and then she wants to go in nappies as I no ppl this has happened to. Maybe once baby is here we should go for it.I just figure she might regress if we do get anywhere with it when baby is here x
