Looking to get an erf car seat for newborn. Currently using older child's seat but know laws have changed so looking to get erf suitable from newborn til 4 ideally. Any recommendations from people using them?

We have the joie every stage - goes from birth to 12, can be rear facing until age 4, or forward facing from 9 months. I really like it!

Recommended to use infant carrier initially.

We have a Britax Two Way Elite and Axkid Minikid in our cars. Both ERF to 25kg (DS on 98 centile)

He went into the TWE about 7 mo and we got the AxKid with Husband new car when he was 1.

We also have and love our Britax Two Way Elite

You'd be much better getting an infant seat and getting an ERF once they're about 12mo. If you have a baby that's taller or heavier than average, a birth to 18kg won't last you - my DS would outgrow that at 2.5yrs. So it's better for me to have a baby seat and then 25kg seats. A PP mentioned the Axkid Minikid and Britax Two Way Elite - both are brilliant and well worth considering once they're outgrowing a infant seat.

Erf aren't great for newborns. I'd get an infant seat and then you'll have a year to decide whether you need a 18kg or 25kg seat. Track the line in the red book to see at what point the child is going to be 18kg, for my son that's between 3 and 3.5 so I have the axkid minikid as it's a 25kg seat.

Squidgling · 02/08/2018 20:12

Also track your child's height in the red book as mine is average weight but very tall so the isize seats for example wouldn't get her to 4 as she will be over the height limit at about 3.

I thought newest model TWE only went rear facing to 18kg? We have Axkid Minikid and it’s great, still going strong for 98th percentile 4 year old and no complaints about rear facing from her yet

starryeyedsnowgirl · 02/08/2018 20:26

Another recommendation for the axkidd mini. And use an infant seat until around 12 months.

Mammmoo · 02/08/2018 21:01

Thanks all. We have an infant seat dc is 7 weeks old and using her older siblings (only because she was early & we didn't have chance to get a new one) but it's 5 years old now so I'm not sure we should still be using it. I was thinking an erf if suitable for a long while would be worth getting now. Will have to decide if to get another carrier and then an erf later on or just use the current one.

Op The Joie Juva is a really budget friendly infant seat if you want to get a new one. It scores well on safety testing.

butterry The new TWE still rear faces to 25kg but will only forward face to 18kg.

Unless your infant carrier has been damaged or in an accident, I would carry on using that. ERF seats start really from the next size up (as obviously infant seats already have to rear face). There is usually a weight minimum but also they have to be able to sit up well in them. My first didn’t fit hers until 13 months and even then it didn’t really offer enough head support. I would look closer to a year.

We have a Klippan Triofix Recline. It’s not inexpensive, but I was really happy with it. Dd rf until she was 4.5 in it.

arbrighton · 03/08/2018 10:50

Weight minimum is usually 9kg but yes they have to sit up well too.
