When did your toddler start asking to go to the toilet instead of you ‘reminding’ them?

Hi,

I posted similar in the potty training thread but didn’t get much response.

I’m on day 5 of potty training my 2.6 year old son and all is going well so far. He is doing the vast majority of wees in his potty and we have only had a few accidents (haven’t actually left the house yet though...)

However I am sitting him on the potty every hour and he hasn’t once independently asked to go. I ask him if he needs to go and he always says no so I sit him on with the promise of reading a story after he has tried, or going to play outside after he has tried etc etc Is this normal at this stage? When do they start telling you they need to go?

Does he do a wee every time you sit him on the potty? So every hour?

Both my sons probably wee three times per day max (they drink a lot but have strong bladders!) If I was sitting them on the loo that regularly they might have a small wee but they'd never get to the stage where they felt they 'needed' to go.

Maybe try extending the time between potty sessions to see if he asks?

Mine did from day one. Waited till she initiated it and was done in 3 days. Never once forced her to sit on the potty or reminded her. Just waited for her to understand it before starting.

You just need to leave him and see.

My toddler is same age and we are on 4th week of potty training.
For us:
Week 1 me asking/encouraging him to try every hour.
Week 2 me reminding him but not as bothered if he said no.
Week 3 he was asking more often. Dry most days.
Week 4 I don't ask at all really (unless going out then he goes before we leave)Also this week he is going longer between pees and doing bigger pees rather than lots of little ones.

Think it may be finished! Though still carrying 5 pairs of pants at all times Smile

DS trained at about 2.9. He did great though so we were really lucky. First day took him every hour or so. No accidents but I’m not entirely sure he got it. Second day reminded but less often. He had one accident and was upset by it. Third day I just reminded him at key moments like after breakfast and before we went out. After that he’s pretty much never had an accident. He does often not tell me until it’s really late and he’s dancing about, despite me asking him a million times beforehand. And he’s like a camel. He goes about 3 times a day despite drinking loads and lots of reminders.

Thanks everyone I think I’ll try extending the time between reminders over the next few days.

It was him that initiated the training as he was seeing ‘big boys’ using the toilet at nursery. My mum then bought him some underpants last week and he insisted on wearing them so we thought we’d run with it! For months he’s been telling me when he’s doing a wee or poo, so I guess he’s just got to get to the next step of telling me before hand!

Just got to get up the courage to leave the house now... oh and have a poo on the potty... there’s always something!

My son is now 3,5 and we potty trained a year ago. After a few weeks he was able to tell us when he needed to go. Sometimes now I make him or ask him to go before we go out if we are doing a long journey or there aren't freely available toilets where we are going. Sometimes he kicks up a fuss and says he doesn't need to go but he usually does do a wee once he gets onto the toilet!

I didn't potty train either of mine until they were almost 3. I'd say it was probably within about a week or so they were able to take themselves off to the toilet and potty.

I did remind mine religiously to begin with, especially when it came to leaving the house without a nappy. I'd say if they don't go themselves within about 90 mins to remind them, but give them the opportunity to go by themselves first.
