Nappy Rash - she can't stop scratching it and it looks like a burn

Can anyone help, my DDs nappy rash is dreadful. i have tried keeping her out of washables, using hardly any powder (I haven't changed it recently), doing an extra rinse. Sudocream, zinc and caster oil cream, all sorts of eco/organic natural creams, metanium. I have also got some steriod cream from the Doctor but nothing seems to be helping (been using it for a week). I try to keep her nappy off as much as I possibly can but she scratches it so badly. I try to keep socks on her hands but she scratches it through them. The bath is really painful for her. I am at my wits end and it is obviously really sore, she cries out every time she does a wee. I dont think the fact she has scratched it raw helps that either.

Can anyone help. I have to go and do bath time now but any thoughts gratefully received. I feel so sorry for the poor little lamb and feel like such a bad mother to boot!

don't know about nappy rash but I have just bought Bepanthen which a friend recommended for my eczema which is driving me insane. Its actually a nappy cream and after doing a quick MN search, lots of mums swear by it. Too early to tell if its working for me as I just put it on about 30 mins ago!

Becareful how much you use of the steriod cream - when DS had nappy rash we over did it and it made it worse - looked like a burn - use only a small amount. Candula cream from the health food shop (can't remember the name - yellow box - about £4.50) was brilliant - I was septical (yet another cream we tried!!!!) but when his bottom was really red it was the only one that didn't make him scream and it really soothed it. I've tried bathing his bottom in weak camomile tea - some people say it works - can't say it worked brilliantly for us but might be worth a try as every bottom is different - good luck!

my eldest used to bleed when I wiped her clean using water and cotton wool at times when she had nappy rash! It was terrible, her skin used to break into small spots of blood. Only thing that worked for her was metanium (think you can get it at big supermarkets) Its yellow and stains clothing but worked within a couple of days.

I keep a tube in now in case she gets sore (she is 8) as her skin is very sensitive.

Oh, pelvicflawed (love the name by the way), I think I might have used too much in my desperation to make it better as it now looks like a burn. I will be more sparing tonight. I will try the Candula too (if not just to add to my collection, hopefully it might work!).

Haven't tried Bepanthen either so that is another one.

Tibni, I have tried Metanium and it hasn't worked but thanks for the tip.

Twofalls - thats exactly what we did (or should I say DH!!) - the instructions said twice a day - I left DS with DH for the day and found he put it on after every change. The steriod cream does work but too much was a disaster. When DS was in real pain we did slip a few doses of calpol over a day - just so that nappy changes were less painful. I've remembered the Candula cream was made by Weleda. Hope it gets better soon.

Drapolene is the only thing that helped DD when she had it

imamummy · 31/05/2007 19:51

I had a similar problem 3 months ago with my newborn who had really awful nappy rash, it was almost sticky with pus and I felt so bad! She didn't wear nappies for days but the only thing that really helped was a cream on prescription from the doctor that was anti-fungal, used alongside metanium.

I did hear of one lady with similar problems whose baby was allergic to something in the cream she was using though, so it's worth watching out for this.

I think I read Calmomile(sp?) and Honey are good for nappy rash. You may need to google that to find out what to do with it though. Might be worth a try

Daktacort worked wonders for my DD. After first application it started working.

raw silk liners work amazingly well for us!

expatmama · 02/06/2007 17:00

DS1 had appalling nappy rash when he was teething - his nappies were so acidic that they blistered his skin - the thing that worked absolute wonders for him was raw egg white - whipped into a creamy foam. i was initially very sceptical but as i had tried practically everything else i thought i?d give it a whirl - it soothed and dried it out in no time! now i know that there is potentially a small risk of transmission of salmonella from the raw egg whites ? but i think you can now get pasteurised liquid egg whites in the UK?

loopybear · 03/06/2007 08:53

My grandma suggested the whipped egg whites. i thought she was having a senior moment and in desperation (like you I tried everything) I thought well I'd got nothing to loose and there was a significant improvement. A friend of my Grandma also suggested I used oiletum junior (not sure spelt that right)and it seemed to do the trick. I use nelsons smootha baby bottom cream (I can only get it in Tesco's and big boots) but it seems to keep the nappy rash to a minimum. My HV did say when she 1st qualified the advice was egg whites (she then added of course I'm not supposed to tell you that now but the old methods are often the best!!)

eidsvold · 03/06/2007 09:09

another vote for calendula cream - worked wonders on dd2

pamplemousse · 11/06/2007 11:44

My dd is the same - have tried all of the below... Doc gave us Daktarin powder for thrush (showed as tiny angry red spots over the red awful rash) and cream she then advise a thick layer of Vaseline. It almost got rid of it in the first couple of days, but now its back (1 week on) - maybe I am overdoing the cream? Do you leave egg white on as a barrier when you put the nappy back on?? I can't leave her nappy off atm cos she scratches it so badly.
Feel so bad for her

Enid · 11/06/2007 13:51

vaseline is brilliant as a barrier against moisture, really improves my dds nappy rash

TooTicky · 11/06/2007 13:52

The best cream I have found is Tui Bee Balme - it works miracles.
