Toys that actually entertain a 1yo?

My daughter is just 1 & ive bought her a ton of the 'good' toys & she literally gets bored in 5 minutes! If that! Chase me Casey, beep bops, chuckle ball etc... does anyone have any suggestions for a toy that will actually get some use? I'm going through websites but I just don't know! TIA..

For my ds1’s first birthday he got a ‘sit to stand’ fisherprice giraffe ball helterskelter toy. It was a favourite toy of all my 3 ds and visiting children all loved it.

A large cardboard box

NerrSnerr · 26/07/2018 17:03

Mine loves the vtech treehouse thing and anything his big sister is playing with

Mine liked duplo and mega blox. At that age though they have a a very short attention span and don’t sit and play with toys for long like a three year old can. It’s better if you sit with them and play and talk to them together

DieAntword · 26/07/2018 17:08

In my experience - all the books on the bookshelf (to systematically remove). The drawer where daddy keeps his insulin needles. Boxes full of fiddly bits that easily get lost to tip all over the floor. And most importantly the dishwasher to clumsily attempt to unload like mummy does when it’s full of dirty dishes.

My DS was 1 on the 8th and he loves easy shape sorters, cars and garage and any toy with balls.

To be fair his fave activity is dragging out the toddlers plate and snack cupboard 🙈

Smurfy23 · 26/07/2018 17:40

Stacking cups, mega bloks, she has these eggs from elc that go inside each other and there's a chick in there- she spends ages trying to put them back together again.

TheHalfBloodPrincess · 26/07/2018 17:43

I bought this for ds for his first birthday - it keeps him occupied for ages, especially now that he can put the pegs in by himself!

As above said, cardboard box, cleaned things that you'd put in the recycling that are safe. Bottle filled with rice, etc. A wallet (not yours!) that you don't need but can put old plastic cards in. Things to post things thru - shape sorters. The colander from the kitchen, laundry basket (one for wet laundry, not dirty) to sit in, a couple of wooden spoons to chew on and bang on stuff. A safe kitchen cupboard to empty and refill - tins cupboard or cereal or something if on the bottom. Toys schmoys. They don't know what toys are, they don't know what much is really at that age so let them explore stuff. colours, shapes, textures (stacking cups or rings). A box of colourful socks should amuse for some time. I used to spend time just wrapping (not for a hot day like today!!) my son up in the duvet and unravelling him. Would be half an hour sorted Grin

Similar the previous suggestions, make up a treasure basket, info here

And stacking beakers have already been mentioned too, for some reason they keep babies and toddlers occupied for ages.

My nearly one year old loves the vtech sit to stand musical keyboard, fire struck station, stackers, blocks in a bucket, squeaky eggs. There the ones I can think of that he really likes. Think we’re gonna get him a trike for his birthday Smile

mnahmnah · 26/07/2018 22:04

Despite all the toys we have bought.... sticks. Plastic bottles. The house phone. Remote controls. Laptop.

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2018 22:05

Shape sorter

DieAntword · 26/07/2018 22:07

Oh god the house phone!

And yeah he loves the remote for the robot hoover (but is kind of scared of the hoover itself). He calls it the ‘oover (imagine a kind of French accent). Super cute.

LastOneDancing · 26/07/2018 22:11

Our best ever toy - a set of stacking cups from poundland. They're still going 4 years later as cups in the play kitchen.

Same as above, my boys also had a basket of empty Tupperware tubs, a juice bottle with pasta in, spoons, pegs... Just stuff.

Tigger001 · 26/07/2018 22:28

Yep my DS is 1 on Wednesday we have bought him a trike and a slide but no doubt the wrapping paper will be more fun, as he laughs hysterically at paper being ripped.
And I totally agree with the love of pegs, tv remote (I try to hide so he doesn't get it) and spends ages bringing random items to me, shoe laces, he loves......he has loads of toys but definitely prefers "stuff" as some one else called it

I think a few mins attention span is normal on things. Does drive me mad too. Especially if I get something out and try to engage my DS then he won't even take a look.

Loves his Happyland train set - it moves when the figure is put in the train and he loves his leapfrog discovery house. Toot toot drivers/ cars etc too but maybe for just 6 mins

Strippervicar · 26/07/2018 22:51

Mine didn't look at toys at all. She liked lights, music, singing and playing with me.
We had some success with a sensory box. So, a plastic pan with pasta in, a wooden spoon, mini feather duster, sillicon/normal cup cake cases, little tiny tupperware boxes with sequins in, measuring spoon. Basically, go to the range or a poundworldy place and buy 20 quid of stuff like that. It may keep them going.

Not very birthdayish, coloured wooden bricks are still played with here 2 years later.

Sunrise888 · 26/07/2018 23:25

Mine has a very short attention didn't for our beautiful toys too. Plus all the bits - the eggs, the balls, the shapes, get then about and mixed up, I sirens more time sorting it than he does!

My lo loves my pilates ball - it's soft enough to grab and throw, he watches it bounce around the walls and chases it! He loves pounding with his hammer. And it was exciting to watch him figure out how to put the ball at the top of the helter skelter, pick it up at the bottom and repeat! Also wrapping paper, the metallic kind that rustles and doesn't tear - 3 months on and it is still in use!

affectionincoldclimate · 26/07/2018 23:40

Stacking cups and Lamaze eggs

anotherangel2 · 27/07/2018 07:42

Kitchen cupboard of Tupperware.
DD was 14 months before she started to play independently and I had to show her how to work.

BiscuitTinClarabel · 27/07/2018 08:00

At one, my DS's favourite thing by far was a 50p ikea washing up brush. Took it everywhere. We were roundly mocked by friends when we turned up at a birthday party with two (not as the gift I hasten to add!) but they were the most popular 'toys' there.

Badgerthebodger · 27/07/2018 08:08

Space blanket
Little pots or tubs with sequins, feathers, buttons, coloured sand, glitter, anything - just make sure the lid is glued on or you’ll be picking small feathers off your sun cream covered child for an hour
Shape sorters
Unloading cupboards
An old TV remote
Fake iPhone (I got one off groupon called a Y phone Grin)
Push along truck or walker
Treasure baskets are fab, look at Pinterest for inspiration. I used to do a different themed one every few days for DS so a shiny one, different colours, kitchen stuff, nature stuff, soft, squishy etc
Painting? Mine never liked it but yours might. Set him up in the bath with paints and hose the lot down when he’s finished
