How many clothes needed for a newborn?

Hi all

I am 22 weeks with first baby. A little boy :)
So just wondering if anyone has any advice on how many of various clothes ill need. Tbh i don't even know the difference between different types of baby clothes 🙈
Sleep suits- to sleep in?
Bodysuit- every day wearing?
Romper suit- ?
Whats a gro bag? Do they sleep in a sleeping bag inside the moses basket?
Also how many muslin cloths will be needed, blankets? He's due on 30th november so will be cold.

Sorry i'm so clueless!

I also need answers to these questions!!

It really depends on your child, my DS had reflux so we went through multiple outfit changes a day but some babies can last the whole day in one outfit.

For newborn I preferred to keep it simple and stick to babygrows (sleepsuits) with a vest (bodysuit) underneath. Romper suits don't have feet and are more for summer than winter.

I would say that 7 sleepsuits and 7 bodysuits would be a good start. If you have a reflux baby you may wish to buy more depending on how many outfit changes you average per day! They change size really frequently for the first few months so better not to have too many of any one size. My 7lb 6oz son was in newborn size for about 2 weeks, then the up to 1 months size for about 3 weeks before going into 0-3 months for about 2 months.

A gro bag can be used instead of blankets once the baby is big enough, check the minimum weight/size and just use blankets until then. You can use them in the Moses basket and also in a cot once they are bigger.

For muslin cloths it again depends on the baby, they are very useful and I used to get through at least 5 a day as they catch the milk when burping and can be used to wipe up spills of any kind!

I had three blankets and that seemed to be enough but my house is warm even in winter so if you have a cooler house you may find that you need more.

Hope that helps!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I only bought a couple of bits for hospital before they were discharged as I didn't know what weight they were going to be (premature triplets!) so vests, baby grows (with feet in) and knitted cardigans/hats.

I just put mine in babygrows with a vest underneath all the time as they're tiny they don't need changing into special sleep suits.

You'll need vests too - long sleeve for November and woolly hats and cardigans. Bibs are handy too.

Watch out for anything complicated that buttons up the back etc as they are a nightmare to put on a wiggly baby!

I've just bought a gro swaddle which looks good for sleeping - they can't sleep in sleeping bags till about 9 lbs usually.

Friends gave me the majority of clothes so do ask around- they grow out of stuff in a matter of weeks so I didn't want to spend loads.

People will usually buy you lots of little outfits too.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your thorough replies! So i basically have 6 bodysuits in newborn size at the min, a couple of 0-3 and a fair few 3-6 month clothes. No sleep suits or anything sleep related yet

Sleepsuits are great all day and night. Dead easy to get on/wash/sort. I was a saddo and had plain white for bedtimes and colourfull ones for daytime. Short sleeved bodysuit underneath. Thin cardi for over the top and thin hat for going out in.

Once they got to about 6m I started doing leggings and tops.

Definitely vests (bodysuits) over the nappy and then sleepsuit over that, especially for a nov baby. I remember being clueless about all this, brings back lovely memories Smile
I second the grosnug or groswaddle instead of faffing with blankets - I never could work it out. Then I think my grobag was from 8.8lb. I Always use sleeping bags / grobags because dd just kicks off the blankets.

Buy a few packets of each thing, and only open 1 or 2 because if you have a bigger baby and need to swap them at the shop you can. I had an over 8lb baby and she was in newborn for 2 weeks at a push, and there was so much that never got worn.
I used bibs more than muslins, and dd wasn't a sicky baby so didn't need half as many as I had. BUT as they get older it's handy to lay them on the floor as a mat, use to wipe up spillages when weaning, as a light blanket when it's warm weather etc etc

Hope that helps, and congratulations! Thanks

You can always buy more if you need to... but I'd say 5 short sleeved vests... 5 long sleeved, long leg bodysuits, don't bother with bibs (you can buy them later if they need it/are refluxy). A mega pack of muslins, a few cellular blankets. Maybe one token baby hat and pair of scratch mitts.

Wish I'd bought less baby stuff.. my DS grew out of in in about 5 seconds and most of the cute outfits I bought actually weren't comfortable/appropriate to a baby and were never born.

I'd recommend just buying a second hand baby bundle - I felt so bad about all the things never worn. Now I buy things from eBay/fb marketplace and sell them on again when I'm done with them. Guilt free even if DS has barely worn them! 😬

A mix of sleepuits and body suits- they are interchangeable with a newborn, more weather dependent.

Muslins- I had loads, bf though and my baby was never sick so didn’t need them at first. So useful once she started eating.

Sleeping bag- not needed at first- only used once transitioned baby to her cot, c3/4 months (in our room)- and realised she was a wriggler. But not all babies are so hold off buying until you see how yours sleeps under a blanket.

Blanket: I had two selular (little holes throughout- in case they pull it over they head at night)- and a non-holed (can’t think of the word for it) one, mainly used when out in her buggy.

Things to avoid: “proper” outfits with back buttons, frills etc- oh and sleep suits with diagnonal buttons- bloody nightmare when trying to change a dozzing baby at 4am.

Ace! So i have a pack of plain white body suits, long sleeved though, so that would go over nappy then another outfit over the top, is that right? I do have some patterned short sleeved body suits too, and some bottoms aged 3-6 months for when he's a bit bigger and can wear them with a top. Again over a (short sleeved) body suit?. Then some sleep suits for bedtime, along with a gro bag, although they seem to be from 8.8lbs up, so before that, blankets?

depends on the weather, general rule of thumb is babies wear one more layer than we do. Some days just a body suit long sleeve with be appropriate, other days a short sleeve, other days, a sleep suit will be best.

re: leggings put them over a body suit- "top" generally didnt bother with until 10months, everything was a body suit and something over it.

yep blankets instead of a sleeping bag at first.

babies sleep a lot so comfort and accessibility for nappy changing is key.
