Baby doesn't react to loud noise

5 day old baby girl doesn't react to loud noises. Toddler can be screaming and she's still asleep. Spent two hours in kids soft play today and the amount of kids screaming next to her and she still never stirred. Stayed asleep the whole time. The hospital forgot to test her hearing so we are going back next week. Anyone elses baby like this?

You'll get a better answer next week. Try not to worry too much until then. Brave of you to be at soft play in this heat 5 days after birth. Good luck.

I found that my tiny newborns slept through earthquakes if they fell asleep in a busy room. (doesn't mean they slept at night!)

So, on the one hand, yes mine were like this, especially once you have older kids, so there is always noise around. (difference between 1st and subsequent children!)

On the other hand of course it is possible that she has hearing issues.
Hope all is OK when you go back next week.

(by the way - 5 days at a soft play centre? Can I gently suggest you need to wait a couple of weeks before you go out into very crowded situations)

My first was like this and turned out to be moderately deaf. Diagnosed at 2 months, hearing aids from that point on. He's 7 now, leads a completely normal life, has a huge vocabulary and never stops talking. Either a) your child is not deaf and there is nothing to worry about, or b) they are deaf, they will be diagnosed quickly after newborn screening, and everything will be ok. Really. It's going to be OK op x

My ds did this, turned out he was still a bit bunged up from my c section so could only partially hear in one ear, it's cleared itself out though x

I wasn't running around soft play. I sat and watch my OH and 2 year old lol. She was born by c section. I'm just more annoyed they forgot to do it and now i will spend the next week worrying because she doesn't react at all to loud noises x

I was told babies are more mucousy from c sections so maybe she's just bunged up, ds had his hearing test and it showed one ear was blocked, maybe ask your GP, has your bub had a hearing test yet? X

No the hospital forgot to do it they said so have to go back next week for them to test her ears then. You can clap, toddler can have a major melt down, kids high pitch screaming and nothing. Doesn't jump, wake up.

Mine had the hearing check and was still like this, a door would slam next to her head and she wouldn't stir. However I broke a jar on the floor and she woke crying, seems only certain sounds disturbed her, most didn't even warrant a twitch.

spugzbunny · 24/07/2018 19:18

Try it when baby isn't asleep. The reaction is very small as well, they don't really jump, it's more of a slight flinch!

SamanthaH92 · 24/07/2018 19:24

Oh tried clapping stood behind the moses basket while she was awake. No slight flinch she just blinked

My ds is moderately deaf, he was diagnosed at newborn hearing. His hearing did fluctuate due to mucus in the ears. Hes now 9 and is exceeding in all areas at school including his speech and listening skills! As a pp has said, either a, shes not deaf and theres nothing to worry about or b, she does have a problem, but with early intervention and fabulous technology she will be absolutely ok. Congrats on your newborn and goodluck!
