Breastfeeding a 7mo that bites!!!

DS is 7 months old. He has 4 teeth already (top and bottom) and is currently teething.
He is EBF, has never taken to a bottle or formula despite trying.
He likes to feed to sleep at night and will wake frequently during the night to comfort suck/ snack.
My issue is that he bites! Hard!!! Since getting his top teeth last month he's drawn caused bruising and drawn blood on several occasions.
He thinks it's funny if I yelp or cry. He will keep chomping to get a reaction sometimes.
My poor boobies are in agony!
He doesn't do it when he's sleepy so think it's intentional and possibly teething related.
Please help! Any advice greatly received!

Probably is teething related and you have all my sympathy because I know it's damn painful.

Try saying no loudly and unlatching him each time he bites.

Unlatch every time. Sometimes I used to put dd down on the floor with a stern no. My 15mo will still occasionally do it, thinks it’s hilarious.

I had this. As soon as my DD did it I took her off, pulled my bra back on and stuck her on the floor. She soon got the message! She looked very confused and cried a bit but it definitely hit home to her!

I had this too except my Dd was a little bit older. If reacting to the bite is causing him to laugh then I would put him down and leave him for a few seconds, put your boob away. Offer him your boob again and gently tell him it isn't nice to bite. Hopefully he will quickly associate biting with no milk and stop doing it! He may get upset but gently explain why to him and offer your boob again, repeating if he bites again. Hope this helps, good luck.

Apparently a fiddle necklace can help too?

The best way I found was to take them off and put them on the floor immediately.

It was effective and quickly learned (so less traumatic for both of us in the long run)

Thanks for the advice. I will try that tomorrow! I have a teething/BF necklace that I bought to try and distract him but I think he finds my boob the best thing to munch!
Hopefully it'll work...don't know how much more I can take! Their teeth are so sharp when they're new aren't they?!

Unlatching and gently putting down worked for me too with biting. Shouting ouch definitely didn't work - DS1 thought it was hilarious! Good luck tomorrow!

Mummymummymummmeeeee · 16/07/2018 06:40

Oops I mean good luck today! I'm never sure when one day finishes and the next begins with being up breastfeeding - hoping to put DS2 down now and get a bit more sleep myself!!

my 9 month old does the same. seems to be just when teething as he will do it lots and then won't for a few weeks. it blooming hurts though and sometimes a yelp and tears are unavoidable but I try to not react too much and tend to unlatch him everytime, put him down on the floor with a firm no and put boob away for a few mins then start again giving him lots of praise and reassurance when he feeds without biting.
it's horrible though. you have my sympathies
