When did your DC drop their milk?

DD (nearly 16 months) still has a good 7-8oz of slightly warmed cows milk from a bottle at bed time. She didn't want any last night, so wondering if she might be about to drop it completely. (She has milk in cereal etc plus yogurt & cheese through the day but won't take cold milk as a drink on its own or from a cup.)

What age did your DCs drop their milk feeds completely and was it of their own accord or did you wean them off it?

(I'm aware official advice is to stop bottle feeding completely at 1 year old and offer milk from a cup instead. More interested in personal experiences.)

Soydora - we tried that yesterday and he cried for 3 hours. (We forgot his bottle so thought we would give it a go.) He is usually a very happy boy.

Breastfed toddlers often have milk before bed too. Honestly wouldn't worry about it.

Is it still bad for teeth if given from a cup with a spout rather than from a bottle (and after teeth brushing)?

Yes, milk from any source (bottle, cup or breast) is full of sugar and therefore needs to be removed from teeth before bed.

Mindchilder · 15/07/2018 18:04

Yes, you don't want to give them anything sugary (or anything but water really) after you brush teeth. Do teeth last thing at night.

Okay, thanks.

My 2.5 year old still has milk every morning but nothing on a night for a while as she's potty trained.

My DC are 3 and 4 and still have a cup of milk.

Milk is good for them so there is no need to rush to give it up.

ETA: they have their milk in the morning so not before bed.

Dc1 is 4.5
Breastfed until 1yr (stopped on 1st bday)
A bottle to go to bed until 2yr (stopped on 2nd bday)
Cup of milk until recently. He decided to switch to water.

So far dc2+3 are following a similar pattern.

DS just turned 3. He stopped all bottles except bedtime at 12m and kept that to 15m when we switched to milk in a cup

He had the cup of milk as a regular part of his bedtime routine (before teeth) until he was about 2. Now he still has it before bed, but it’s a bit hit and miss and I basically just give his cup to use up any milk leftover from the day. He gets a cup with breakfast and I just keep it in the fridge and has it for afternoon snack time and sometimes at dinner if he requests it. Some days he asks for it and drinks loads, other days he has hardly any.
