Anyone else's baby won't sleep in the pram?

DS2 aged 14 weeks hasn't fallen asleep in the pram since he was 5 weeks old - he lies there happily awake until he gets overtired and then cries, I've tried carrying on until I get home when he's crying a bit but not distraught thinking 'he's bound to fall asleep eventually, all babies sleep in prams don't they?' but he doesn't. Also doesn't sleep in the car seat unless someone else drives and I sit next to him comforting him. DS1 was the same. When DS1 was sleep trained he did start to nap in the pram as long as it kept moving and as long as he was put in there exactly at nap time, not over or under tired, until he was 18 months old and it stopped working again. Hasn't been too much of a problem so far as DS2 has been doing all his naps in the baby carrier when out and about. Staying in a hot country at the moment though and the baby carrier is not such a good option in the heat!! Am I doing something wrong with having 2 DCs that don't nap in the pram?? Or anyone else have the same problem?

Mines slept in the pram like a total dream for a grand 3weeks then did exactly what you described. Think it must be really common. Dc1 I think I had pfb syndrome as I started getting antsy about going out when lo was going to be tired... Expecting dc2 and I hope to go with the flow more and hopefully don't fall into the trap I'm stuck in now, where i try my hardest not to be out when dc1 (16mth) is likely to be tried, as the nap if anything at all will be 30mins tops vrs the 2hrs that would happen at home.

Sorry no real advice there

Dd would sleep in her pram. But only when it was stationary in a dark room. Out and about? No way.

Ds would sleep anywhere and any time in any conditions.

Kids are odd.

LivLemler · 11/07/2018 20:28

DD is three months and exactly the same. She'll now go happily in the pram awake for, ooh, maybe 40 minutes on a good day. Hmm But until the last couple of weeks, even the shortest of walks would guarantee me coming back with a screaming baby. Car seat the same locally although she'd sometimes sleep on a motorway drive.

She's getting better now, but not once has she fallen asleep in the pram. She'll go in it asleep at home and take her nap there. But what everyone says about them sleeping in the pram while you go for a walk definitely doesn't apply here.

DS1 slept beautifully in the pram, and I couldn't understand why DS2 wouldn't.

Transpired DS2 was a tummy sleeper!

Mines the same, makes going out very stressful.

Things have improved slightly since I switched her to facing outwards (around 6m) just randomly did it because the sun was in her eyes, and she didn't cry as much. Can walk a bit longer and she has fallen asleep on the odd occasion. Has to be sat up though, cry's if you lower her 🤦🏽‍♀️
Clearly she was sick of seeing my face🤷🏽‍♀️

That's interesting jazzandh - DS1 has slept on his tummy since he could roll over - I wonder if that's what it is.
At least I'm not the only one - I feel like I see so many babies and toddlers sleeping in their prams, but thinking about it logically now I guess everyone else whose baby doesn't sleep in the pram is doing something else at nap time!
Wheresmycustard I hope your DC2 is better at pram sleeping for you, if not a baby carrier is great when it's not hot weather (worked v. well for DS1 and works for DS2 if he also has a dummy)

Non pram or car seat tummy sleeper here too! It's so annoying seeing mums pushing theirs casually around the shops with a muslin draped over the pushchair and you're racing round getting things done to get home for nap time (plus the horrible drive home where you are trying to keep the awake whilst driving safely so you get a long nap at home rather than the 20 mins in the car!). That said, some if those pram pushing mums may have babies who only nap that way and would kill for a cit napping baby so they could out their feet up or get the housework done instead if pounding the streets cone rain or shine!
When do you think they start napping in the pram or carseat? I'd like to go on holiday in this country but don't fancy a screaming baby for the whole journey!!!

Mummymummymummmeeeee · 12/07/2018 22:09

Catheroo I can't really say that car journeys got easy with DS1 until he got old enough not to need to nap, sorry :( DS1 didn't use a dummy though, DS2 does and if I sit in the back with him and keep putting it back in when it falls out he does fall asleep, so that's the only thing I can suggest if someone else drives, although I imagine that works less well as they get older :/

Just to add, we found the best chance of DS1 napping in the car without screaming forever first would be if we put him in there at the same time as we would put him in the cot for a nap, so we would usually set off anywhere at morning nap time, or if it was a long journey or when he went down to just one nap, stop at services on the way and set off again at nap time. It was still a bit hit and miss though whether he would fall asleep easily so wasn't stress free travelling but was the best we could do!

Mine never slept in the pram or the car - drove me mad! And I still get jealous when I see mums getting stuff done while pushing around their sleeping infants. So unfair! She's a great sleeper (in her bed) now though Grin

avocuddl · 13/07/2018 22:33

I don't have a baby that will sleep in a cot either so I'm pretty screwed!

I just remembered this thread because we're on another holiday in the UK this time and had an epic 7 hour drive to get here during which DS2 now 14 months managed to sleep twice for 30 minutes, and DS1 aged 3 didn't sleep at all. I spent the last hour of the trip constantly singing nursery rhymes to keep them both happy! It doesn't get any easier!! I'm so envious of people whose children will sleep in the car and dreading the drive back now!

Ours won't sleep in his basinet, he just cries until we pick him up. He sometimes sleeps in the car, but not always.
We've got a travel system and he's really content if we just have him in the car seat for walks, even if he didn't fall asleep. Allows me to go for walks without constant crying. Maybe something worth trying? I think for our DS it worked better as he can see more and he's got less room to move about, making it easier for him to settle. We have a cover for it as well, so when he's tired it's easier for him to fall asleep when it's darker and there's less distractions.
